»Artificial Intelligence (AI) Literacy at Leatherby Libraries
Leatherby Libraries advances AI literacy at Chapman University by supporting students, faculty, researchers, staff, and the broader community in thoughtfully engaging with artificial intelligence in education, research, and scholarship. We focus on a human-centered, responsible approach to AI, fostering clarity, ethical awareness, and meaningful exploration of how AI shapes learning, creativity, and academic inquiry.
AI Applications in Leatherby Libraries
Collection Development: Pilot projects tested ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, and Perplexity to identify subject gaps in library holdings.
Library Services: AI has been applied to redesign the Library Hours widget and to support web usability studies, demonstrating how AI can enhance user experience and access to resources.
Text Mining & NLP: Through the BERTopic project, librarians apply advanced natural language processing to analyze large text corpora, including medical humanities and archival collections, unlocking new avenues of research.
Events
Parent Spring Summit: AI literacy workshops designed specifically for parents, equipping them with the knowledge to understand AI’s role in their children’s education and daily lives.
Homecoming AI Master Class: A sold-out session titled AI for Everyone introduced alumni, parents, and students to the fundamentals of AI. The event underscored
growing community interest in AI literacy and Chapman’s role in meeting that demand.
Exhibitions and Displays
AI: The Next Chapter Display: A year-long display highlighting AI resources, podcasts, bibliographies, and creative works. Features
include flyers, QR codes, AI-generated visuals, and inspirational quotes to spark
dialogue on AI’s role in education and research.
AI 2.0 Display: Is AI a Tool, a Threat, or a Teammate?: This book display delves into the ever-evolving relationship between humans and artificial

Beyond the Lens: AI Infusion in Art and Photography: An exhibition exploring the creative potential of AI in photography and visual storytelling. The year-long display highlights how AI reshapes artistic processes and reimagines future possibilities.
Library of the Future Book Display: A thematic exhibit featuring works such as Library 2035: Imagining the Next Generation of Libraries. It highlights how libraries will evolve in an AI-driven era.
Grants and Awards
NSF GRANTED Program: A $100,000 federally funded project examining AI governance, implementation, and equity at emerging research institutions. Chapman received a $19,000 sub-award, strengthening the Libraries’ role in shaping national AI policy and practice.
SCELC Research Incentive Award: A $2,500 award (2025) supporting Chapman’s participation in Ithaka’s multi-institutional research project, Integrating AI Literacy into the Curricula. This initiative involves 45 universities nationwide.
Librarian Scholarship
AI Literacy Innovations: ChatGPT in First-Year Instruction: A peer-reviewed poster presented at ALA Annual and SCELC, documenting Chapman’s unique approach to embedding AI literacy into the first-year information literacy program.
Making the Most of AI in Health Sciences Libraries: Published in the Journal of the Medical Library Association (2025), this article evaluates ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Copilot in health sciences collection development. It highlights both the promise and limitations of these tools.
Applying AI and Chatbots in Collection Development: Featured in Doody’s Core Titles (2025), this article assesses AI and chatbots as supplementary aids for analyzing subject coverage and identifying collection gaps in academic libraries.
The Big Conversation: AI in the Creative Writing Classroom: An essay in Writer’s Chronicle that explores AI’s impact on pedagogy, creativity, and authorship, situating Chapman at the forefront of conversations about generative AI and the arts.
Panels
AI at the University: Balancing Innovation and Integrity in the Classroom: A cross-campus faculty panel exploring both the opportunities and ethical challenges of AI in higher education. Panelists discussed academic integrity, equity, and the potential of AI to enhance learning.
SCELCapalooza: Developments in AI Tools at SCELC Institutions: A regional panel highlighting how libraries are using emerging AI tools to transform services, instruction, and research. Chapman librarians shared practical insights and positioned the University as a leader among peer institutions.
Generative AI in Libraries (GAIL) Conference: Chapman participates annually in this international conference, presenting on topics such as data science workflows, instructional practices, and the ethical implications of AI. These contributions elevate the Libraries’ national visibility in the AI literacy conversation.
Rinker Campus Initiatives
Pharmacy Curriculum Integrations: AI modules are incorporated into pharmacy courses (PCL 522 and PCL 523), equipping students with skills to evaluate drug information and leverage AI tools for evidence-based practice.
Systematic & Scoping Reviews: Librarians conduct and support reviews exploring AI’s impact on patient safety and antimicrobial stewardship. Results are disseminated nationally at MLA and NNLM conferences.
Virtual Reality + AI: At the Rinker Health Sciences Campus, immersive technologies are integrated with AI to support student training in clinical and research settings.

Everything You Need to Know About AI Workshop Series: A multi-part series designed for faculty and staff that covers AI fundamentals, advanced prompting strategies,
multimodal applications, and visualization. Offered in hybrid formats, the series
equips educators with practical skills to responsibly incorporate AI into teaching
and research.
AI Literacy in the Curriculum: AI modules are integrated into courses across disciplines, including First-Year Foundations, Social Sciences, Food Science, Creative Writing, and Health Sciences. These sessions ensure students gain early exposure to AI literacy, developing critical skills to evaluate and apply generative AI responsibly in academic contexts.
Community Outreach Workshops: Beyond traditional classrooms, the Libraries extend AI literacy to the broader Chapman community. Sessions at the Parent Spring Summit, Homecoming Master Class (AI for Everyone), and Town & Gown Master Class make AI accessible for parents, alumni, and community members.
