Providing a comprehensive experience in a broad range of medical activities, the fellowship program emphasizes inter-professional integrated training in clinical oncology and medical affairs through enriched, hands-on experiences. The fellowship flawlessly blends two types of expertise into one experience, which is essential for the fellow’s foundational knowledge, growth, and ultimate career success.

This 2-year fellowship prepares the fellow to: 

  • Actively participate in specific areas of medical affairs, clinical practice, and academia through intensive training and mentorship
  • Gain experience in various areas of Medical Affairs, including Medical Communications, Medical Information, Medical Strategy, and other in-demand areas of industry
  • Promote the value of a clinically-trained pharmacist in Medical Affairs within the pharmaceutical industry
  • Become a highly competent candidate to be recruited by the pharmaceutical industry because of their expertise in hematology-oncology disease areas and medical affairs

The first 6 months will be comprised of clinical training and inter-professional experiences, which will be delivered through clinical rotations in two oncology practices to understand real-time patient care and prepare the fellow for medical affairs rotations. The fellow will engage in clinical topic discussions at the University and participate in the CUSP Teaching Certificate Program. Additionally, training of this nature will develop the fellow in areas such as presentation organization and delivery, communication, biostatistics, pharmacoeconomics, pharmacogenomics, among other highly-sought out expertise. 

The fellow will spend the remainder year and a half at Amgen in Thousand Oaks, California, actively participating in specific areas of medical affairs, including medical information and medical communication, through intensive, interactive practices with different teams. The fellow is offered a unique opportunity to blend their clinical understanding of Hematology-Oncology and Medical Affairs, and use cutting-edge scientific instruments to study the subtlest biological mechanisms in search of therapies that will improve the lives of those who suffer from serious diseases.

This fellowship is a partnership between Chapman University and Amgen Inc., the program is co-directed by Dr. Sun “Coco” Yang, BsPharm, M. Sci., PhD, BCPPS, APH, who is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice, and Dr. Laila Khoury-Chamoun, PharmD, who serves as the Executive Director of Oncology Global Medical Communications with Amgen Inc..

Jessica Pham, PharmD

2021-2023 CUSP-Amgen Oncology Medical Affairs Fellow
Jessica Pham, Pharm.D., is the 2021-2023 CUSP-Amgen Oncology Medical Affairs fellow. Dr. Pham obtained her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Southern California School of Pharmacy. During her graduate career, she was heavily involved in both academic and applied research. Dr. Pham’s interest in the biopharmaceutical industry stems from a desire to contribute to large-scale efforts to provide innovative drug therapies for patients. Throughout her pharmacy career, Dr. Pham gained exposure to areas such as medical affairs, regulatory affairs, and clinical development and worked to further drug therapies for diseases with unmet medical needs. She is passionate about advancing cancer treatments and the supportive care in hematology/oncology. Dr. Pham is excited to be serving as a fellow in this program that allows her to experience real-time patient care alongside an interdisciplinary clinical care team and to obtain hands-on training in a broad range of Medical Affairs activities.

Eline Kocharyan, PharmD

2022-2024 CUSP-Amgen Oncology Medical Affairs Fellow
Eline Kocharyan, Pharm.D., is the 2022-2024 CUSP-Amgen Oncology Medical Affairs fellow. Dr. Kocharyan obtained her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of California, San Francisco School of Pharmacy. During her academic training, she gained experiences from both acute care and managed care practice settings, while participating in clinical and pharmaceutical outcomes research projects. Her interest in the biopharmaceutical industry was initially inspired by her passion for research and the large-scale impact of developing innovative therapies and diagnostic technologies for vulnerable patients. These ambitions were later strengthened during her externship at Amgen, as well as clinical experiences in oncology clinics and investigational drug pharmacy. Dr. Kocharyan chose the CUSP-Amgen Oncology Medical Affairs fellowship due to its unique combination of real-time interdisciplinary patient care, industry training and teaching experiences.

Madison Ward, PharmD candidate 2023

2023-2025 CUSP-Amgen Oncology Medical Affairs Fellow
Madison Ward, PharmD, is the 2023-2025 CUSP-Amgen Oncology Medical Affairs fellow. Dr. Ward obtained her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Colorado Skaggs School of Pharmacy. While pursuing her PharmD, she conducted and presented clinical research, participated on the Children’s Hospital Colorado Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee, and assisted investigational drug services in conducting clinical trials for oncology therapeutics. Dr. Ward is especially passionate about the hematology/oncology space and having a direct, positive impact on this patient population at large. She is eager to serve as the Postdoctoral Oncology Medical Affairs Fellow, allowing her the opportunity to work in a clinical setting alongside an interdisciplinary care team and to gain valuable experiences and hands-on medical affairs training at Amgen.
