How to Use your 4-year Plan

  • This is a suggested 4-year plan for your major and not meant to replace regular academic advising and advising from your Program Faculty advisor.
  • The plan is flexible and can be changed to accommodate studying abroad, a second major/minor(s) or AP/IB credits.
  • You should work with your program advisor and academic advisor to develop a plan that meets your interests and goals.
  • You must earn a minimum of 120 credits to graduate and 78 major-specific credits to earn a B.F.A. in Graphic Design.
  • Transfer students and those looking to add B.F.A. in Graphic Design as a second major should contact the program advisor for degree planning.

Suggested 4-year Plan

  • We encourage you to select your General Education (GE) and minor/second major/Themed Inquiry/Honors program around the plan below. Once you fill your GE classes around your major classes, you will have a better idea of space remaining each semester when choosing your Exploration Focus.
  • To be enrolled full time, you must take at least 12 credits a semester.
  • In order to graduate within 4 years, we recommend you take 30 credits a year.

 

Year 1

Fall Semester (6 credits for major)

  • GD 102 - Research Methods for Designers (3 credits)
  • GD 103 - Visualization - Perspective and Rendering (3 credits)
  • Art/GD elective (choose one) (3 credits)*

Spring Semester (9 credits for major)

  • GD 100 - Introduction to Lettering and Book Arts (3 credits)
  • ART 122 - Objects and Space (3 credits)
  • Art/GD elective (choose one) (3 credits)*
  • ART 195 - Art and Text (3 credits)**

* Art/GD electives can be taken in any semester or over the summer or over Interterm.

** ART 195 can be substituted with AH 200, AH 201, AH 203, or AH 205.

 



Year 2

Beginning in Year 2, students are encouraged to enroll in GD 305/405 Portfolio Workshop during each interterm. Students are also recommended to consider taking GD 308 Sustainable Design London Travel Course (offered during summer) as an elective in the second or third year.

Fall Semester (9 credits for major)

  • GD 200 - Introduction to Graphic Design (3 credits)**
  • GD 201 - Typography (3 credits)**
  • GD 202 - Interactive, UX and Web Design (3 credits)

Spring Semester (9 credits for major)

  • GD 203 - Color (3 credits)
  • GD 300 - Graphic Design (3 credits) - in conjunction with the sophomore portfolio assessment.
  • GD 304 - History of Graphic Design (3 credits)

** Students must earn receive a grade of B or higher before they can enroll in subsequent GD courses.

 



Year 3

In Year 3, students are encouraged to complete GD 390 Internship as an elective. They will also have their Junior OC Portfolio Assessment in the spring semester.

Fall Semester (9 credits for major)

  • GD 302 Branding and Advertising Design (3 credits)
  • GD 329 Interdisciplinary Design Investigations (3 credits)
  • GD 307 Advanced Typography (3 credits)
  • Art History Requirement (choose one)

Spring Semester (12 credits for major)

  • GD 204 Objects and Space II (3 credits) - not required; elective only
  • GD 306 4D Design (3 credits) - in conjunction with the Junior portfolio assessment.
  • GD 402 Advanced Interaction UX/UI and Web Design (3 credits)
  • GD 406 Motion Design (3 credits)
  • Junior OC Portfolio Assessment listed above

 


 

Year 4

In Year 4, students will have their Senior OC Portfolio Assessment and OC Portfolio Mixer in the spring semester.

Fall Semester (9 credits for major)

  • GD 400 - Advanced Graphic Design (3 credits)
  • GD 401 - Business Practices/Pre-internship (3 credits)
  • Art History Requirement (choose one) (3 credits)

Spring Semester (6 credits for major)

  • GD 303 - Information Design (3 credits)
  • GD 408 Graphic Design Portfolio (3 credits) - in conjunction with Senior OC Portfolio Assessment
  • GD 499 Internship
