- We encourage you to select your General Education (GE) and minor/second major/Themed Inquiry/Honors program around the plan below. Once you fill your GE classes around your major classes, you will have a better idea of space remaining each semester when choosing your Exploration Focus.
- To be enrolled full time, you must take at least 12 credits a semester.
- In order to graduate within 4 years, we recommend you take 30 credits a year.
Year 1
Fall Semester (6 credits for major in each semester in the your first year)
You select two from the following:
- COM 100 - Introduction to Communication Studies (3 credits)
- COM 102 - Public Speaking in a Diverse Society (3 credits)
- COM 110 - Interpersonal Communication (3 credits)
- COM 151 - Mass Communication (3 credits)
Spring Semester (6 credits for major)
You select the remaining two from the following:
- COM 100 - Introduction to Communication Studies (3 credits)
- COM 102 - Public Speaking in a Diverse Society (3 credits)
- COM 110 - Interpersonal Communication (3 credits)
- COM 151 - Mass Communication (3 credits)
Year 2
Fall Semester (6 credits for major)
You select two from the following:
- COM 210 - Theories of Persuasion (3 credits)
- COM 211 - Intercultural Communication or COM 212 - Group Communication (3 credits)*
- COM 295 - Introduction to Research Methods (3 credits)
- COM 314 - Communication Theory or COM 350 - Mass Communication Theory (3 credits)*
Spring Semester (12 credits for major)
Note: Completing COM 100 with a minimum grade of B- is a pre-requisite for COM 295. COM 295 is a co-requisite for 300 level COM courses.
You select two from the following:
- COM 210 - Theories of Persuasion (3 credits)
- COM 211 - Intercultural Communication or COM 212 - Group Communication (3 credits) *
- COM 295 - Introduction to Research Methods (3 credits)
- COM 314 - Communication Theory or COM 350 - Mass Communication Theory (3 credits)*
* You will only need to take COM 211 or COM 212 to satisfy degree requirements. You will not need to take both courses. In addition, you will only need to take COM 314 or COM 350.
Year 3
Year 3 Notes
During your third year, you need to complete 6 credits of upper-division electives and 6 credits from SCC 301/COM 490/COM 491/COM 495/COM 499. You can choose how to distribute these credits over the year. Below is a sample.

- SCC 301 - Interviewing and Focus Groups (3 credits)
- COM 490 - Independent Internship (½-6 credits)
- COM 491 - Student-Faculty Research/Creative Activity (3 credits)
- COM 495 - Research Seminar in Communication (3 credits)
- COM 499 - Individual Study (1-6 credits)

Spring Semester (6 credits for major)
You select one to two fom the following:
- SCC 301 - Interviewing and Focus Groups (3 credits)
