Body of the World: The Californian Landscapes of Inna Jane Ray
Temporary Exhibition: March 22, 2025 - November 2, 2025
Burra Community Room, Hilbert Museum
Inna Ray (1949-2020) was a prolific painter, writer, and photographer who wove visual
and verbal languages to explore her connection to California landscapes, her spirituality,
and her own identity. This exhibition, from the collection of The Escalette Collection,
captures Ray’s depictions of nature and the resilience of California’s ecosystems
and its inhabitants. Titled after a quote from one of her journals, Body of the World carves a place for Ray within the Californian landscape tradition; much of this work
was created during a fertile period Ray spent painting in the Eastern Sierra mountains
and Northern California.
Sensation
Permanent Exhibition
Beckman Hall, 3rd Floor
Through the eyes of LA-based artist and muscician Steve Roden (1964-2023), the world
is full of endless possibilities if only you listen and observe. So often we force ourselves to find the correct answer, but Roden’s work defies
singular meaning, prompting audiences to follow their intuition. This exhibition,
which features a collection of prints, paintings, collages, and embroideries, invites
you to explore the phenomenon of sensations, let go of your preconceived notions,
and discover the magic of Steve Roden.
Echoes in the Mirror
Temporary Exhibition: December, 2024 - November, 2025
Roosevelt Hall, 1st Floor Hallway
Echoes in the Mirror takes the theme of gender and sexuality to explore how art engages with the human
body. Specifically, the students were interested in how expectations surrounding the
body can be performed or abandoned in the pursuit of identity and self. Reflecting
on ideas of dysphoria (uneasiness or discomfort with one’s body) and its antonym,
euphoria, the students ask visitors to think about the relationship they have with
the image in the mirror.
