Our interdisciplinary degree empowers you to communicate effectively in our increasingly global and interconnected society. While in the program, you’ll:

  • Pursue fluency in your chosen language (see Language Track options below). This includes language courses and (we strongly recommend) at least one semester abroad.
  • Gain an understanding of communication theory and research. In addition to coursework, you’ll complete a capstone service sequence (including a service project or internship) to showcase your language and communication skills.

Integrated Graduate Programs

Through an Integrated graduate program, you can earn an undergraduate and master’s degree with just one additional year of coursework beyond the traditional four years.

Capstone sequence

At the end of the program you will complete an individualized nine-credit capstone sequence that includes:

  • A service learning course/internship. You’ll have a world of opportunities and your program advisor will help you find the right one for you. Options range from volunteering locally to doing a summer internship abroad. See what students have done.
  • Intensive research in your chosen language track.
  • A senior seminar in the global workplace, which could include gaining experience in a corporation, government agency or nonprofit.

This sequence will provide hands-on experience in an area that aligns with your interests and career goals.

Study abroad opportunities

We encourage students to spend at least one semester in a country/region where their chosen language is spoken. We are also happy to support multiple student abroad experiences, which can include: 

  • A full semester abroad
  • An Interterm (winter) or summer travel course
  • A summer internship

Participating in School of Communication groups and organizations presents opportunities to acquire hands-on experience, like completing projects to enhance your resume or portfolio, fostering connections with fellow students and faculty members and building professional networks within the industry.

Department of World Languages clubs

In addition, Chapman’s Department of World Languages offers a variety of clubs and activities. These can help improve your cultural knowledge and fluency in your chosen language.
