Offered in partnership with the Orange County Public Defender’s Office, the Chapman University Fowler School of Law Criminal Defense Clinic allows upper-level students who are exploring careers in advocacy, litigation, and criminal law a unique opportunity to gain real-world experience assisting with cases under the supervision of the Orange County Public Defender’s Office.

The classroom component of the clinic is taught by Public Defender Mark Brown. Students work closely with Public Defenders in the courtroom, assisting with defending felony and misdemeanor cases.

Clinic Information

The Criminal Defense Clinic is a four (4) credit course available to 2L and 3L students who have successfully completed Evidence. Enrollment is contingent on the successful completion of a background check.

Professor Mark Brown is the director of the Criminal Defense Clinic and serves as a Public Defender in Orange County.

Legal clinics give students the opportunity to attain real-world experience working on actual cases under the supervision of clinical specialists and seasoned practitioners. Our clinics provide hands-on fieldwork with clients, research projects, document preparation, brief writing, and court appearances. Many clinical programs provide pro bono services to members of the community in need of legal aid.
