The Fowler School of Law offers an exceptional bar preparation program with a goal of preparing students for California and out-of-state bar examinations. Including for-credit courses as well as a supplemental bar preparation program, students are rigorously prepared for all three parts of the bar examination which includes five one-hour essay questions, the 90-minute performance test and the 200-question multi-state bar examination.
For-Credit Bar Preparation Courses
The Fowler School of Law offers two separate and distinct for-credit bar preparation courses: Select Topics in American Law and Legal Analysis Workshop.
Select Topics in American Law is a survey of all essay subjects covered by the California Bar Exam. It serves as a review of both the substantive law as well as techniques of successful essay writing under examination situations.
Similarly, our Legal Analysis Workshop focuses on the CA Bar's Performance Exam and the multiple-choice skills needed to complete the seven Multistate Bar Examination subjects successfully. Students work on analysis and drafting of legal documents typically tested by the CA Bar Exam's Performance Test section.
The Supplemental Bar Prep Program
Consisting of two parts, the Supplemental Bar Prep Program supports bar takers with on-going essay writing and Performance Test critiques, exposing them to Multistate Bar Exam mock tests and providing reviews of their MBE performance. This program complements commercially available bar preparation courses that many students take before the bar exam, supplementing those courses and providing guidance, feedback and assistance in a personalized manner that commerical courses don't provide.
During the Supplemental Bar Prep Program, our students submit practice essays and performance exams to the bar-prep team consisting of faculty, support staff and Fowler alumni who critique practice exams and return them to students with comments and suggestions for improvement. Between each of the mock exams in the bar-prep program, our students meet for extended feedback sessions to review their performance and to deepen their understanding of the seven subjects being tested.
