»Financial Aid

The objective of the Chapman University's Graduate Financial Aid Office is to package students according to their financial needs, in accordance with established policies and regulations, so that students can focus on their legal education. We provide financial assistance, in a manner that maintains the dignity of the individual and the integrity of the Federal Aid Programs, to eligible students committed to pursuing their law degree.

A range of programs are available to assist eligible students in meeting their financial needs. These programs include:

Chapman Law Scholarships

Merit-Based Scholarships - The Fowler School of Law offers merit-based scholarships to first year students determined by undergraduate cumulative GPA and LSAT score and available scholarship funds. Merit-based scholarships are awarded upon admission to the JD program. Students must maintain a 2.9 cumulative grade point average in their second and third years of legal study to retain their scholarship award.

Federal Loans

Federal Stafford and Federal Graduate PLUS loans are available. These are Federal low-interest rate loans available to students completing the FAFSA. Learn more about federal loans.

Federal Work Study

Federal Work Study can be requested by students after their first year. Work study allows students to earn money to use for their educational expenses. Fowler School of Law students work primarily as research assistants to our professors or in the Hugh & Hazel Darling Law Library.  If a student is interested in receiving Work Study, they should contact the Graduate Financial Aid Office. Private Loans

Private Education Loans are offered by lenders to International Students and students who are not eligible for the Federal Loan Programs. Private loans have different fees and interest rates and vary across lenders.

Fowler School of Law Scholarships

Tuition Merit-Based Scholarships

The Fowler School of Law provides a generous merit-based scholarship program based on undergraduate cumulative GPA and LSAT score to assist with the cost of legal education. By seeking to meet the financial needs of as many students as possible, we enable our students to graduate with relatively low levels of indebtedness.

Our tuition merit-based scholarships can be renewed provided students have a cumulative 2.900 at the end of each spring semester.

Earning a JD Merit Scholarship

Students who did not qualify for an entering merit-based scholarship are eligible to earn a scholarship if they rank in the top 15% of their cohort group at the end of their 1L year. Students who qualified for a partial scholarship upon matriculation are eligible for a scholarship increase, if they rank in the top 15% of their cohort group at the end of their 1L year, and the amount earned is greater than their current scholarship.

Merit-based scholarships earned (or increased) at the conclusion of the 1L year will be applied during the student’s second year and may be renewed for the student’s third year provided that the student maintains a cumulative GPA of 2.900 or higher at the end of their 2L spring semester. Cohort groups will be determined by the Fowler School of Law Registrar in accordance with published policies.

First Generation Scholarship

First Generation scholarships are awarded to one or more students entering each fall in an amount up to $20,000 and can be renewed provided a student maintains a cumulative GPA of 2.900 or higher at the end of the first academic year and each subsequent academic year thereafter. To be eligible for the First Generation Scholarship, applicants must complete a First Generation Scholarship application and be the first member of their immediate family to earn an undergraduate degree and be admitted to Fowler School of Law. When selecting recipient(s), applicants with a demonstrated commitment and/or history of service to legally underserved communities or populations will be given priority. For full-time students, the scholarship is limited to three years. Applications are made available to admitted students typically in March.

Dean’s Kennedy Scholarship

Dean’s Kennedy Scholarships are awarded to a very limited group of full-time admitted students with outstanding academic achievements, usually in the top 75% percentile of the student profile, to support their legal studies at Fowler School of Law. These scholarships are renewable provided students have a cumulative GPA of 2.200 at the end of each spring semester.

Distinguished Student Fellowship

Distinguished Student Fellowships are awarded to a select group of full-time admitted students with outstanding academic achievements to support their legal studies at Fowler School of Law. The Distinguished Student Fellowships are disbursed directly to the student in four equal installments during their first year of study at the Fowler School of Law. Distinguished Student Fellowships are awarded in addition to and separately from merit-based tuition scholarships. These fellowships can be renewed provided the recipient maintains a cumulative GPA of 2.200 or higher at the end of their first academic year and each subsequent academic year thereafter, limited to a maximum of three years.

Estimated Cost of Attendance

Federal regulations require each school to develop an estimated Cost of Attendance. This figure is used in determining the amount of Federal aid a student is eligible for. At Chapman University Fowler School of Law, tuition is determined by the Board of Trustees and the Finance Committee.  The cost of living allowance is based on student surveys, institutional costs, Bureau of Labor Statistics, and U.S. Department of Education guidelines.

Students may not receive aid in excess of their Cost of Attendance. Aid is considered to be loans, grants, work assistance, fellowships, or scholarships.

Students' costs may vary and an increase in a student's Cost of Attendance (Budget) may be possible for special circumstances.  Please contact the Graduate Financial Aid Office via email or by phone at (714) 628-2730 if you need additional funding.
