Mark Maier (Ph.D., Cornell University) is Associate Professor and Program Chair, Leadership & Organization Studies; Director, The Chapman Leadership Project; Director, Chapman Human Diversity Program. Mark came to Chapman in 1994 to serve as founding chair of the Leadership & Organization Studies (formerly Organizational Leadership) programs. He earned his Ph.D. in sociology from Cornell University in 1986 with emphases in social organization and change, industrial and labor relations, women’s studies, and educational psychology. His areas of teaching and consulting expertise include: servant-leadership, diversity, team development and ethical decision making. He has won numerous awards for his scholarship and teaching, including the 1999 Fritz Roethlisberger Distinguished Educator Award, which identified him as one the outstanding teachers in his discipline in the country. He has led workshops on teaching effectiveness for Chapman faculty, WASC, and regional and national audiences. He actively consults on leadership development for such clients as The County of Orange, The City of Palm Desert, Boeing, 3M, Arnel Management, and the I.R.S.  Mark has been cited in such national media as the LA Times, the New York Times, MSNBC, and PBS, and has produced a training module on leadership and ethical decision-making that is in use at over 700 academic, public and for-profit organizations in 23 nations. In 2004, he was honored by the Baha’I community of Aliso Viejo for his work in the Human Diversity program with a Model of Unity Award. Outside of Chapman, he enjoys coaching OJSC Soccer, playing tennis and guitar. He lives with his wife and their two sons in Orange.
