  1. Critical Thinking: Students learn to explore issues, ideas, and events and evaluate them before clearly formulating their own views or opinions. Our courses promote critical thinking on an international level because they are taught in Spanish and each course, in one way or another, touches on different countries in the Hispanic world; students are given written and oral assignments, essays and presentations and are guided to think critically about the topics chosen.

  2. Oral Communication: Students will be able to participate orally in class conversations, oral individual/group presentations and whole class discussions in Spanish. Students who are at the advanced level of speaking Spanish are already global citizens and the topics discussed in class are by nature international and interdisciplinary since a wide variety cultural, historical and social themes from the Hispanic world are explored.

  3. Written Communication: The student will be able to compose entirely in Spanish a research paper at the ACTFL level of Advanced or above. Students will be able to write formal and informal texts of different genres while demonstrating a high degree of grammatical competency and appropriate use of vocabulary and stylistic features.

  4. Information Literacy: Students will be able to identify, locate, evaluate and effectively and responsibly use and share the information that is relevant to the issue at hand in a research paper.

  5. Cultural Understanding (Based on the ACTFL Criteria for Cultural Understanding): Cultural understanding is an important part of world languages education. Experiencing other cultures develops a better understanding and appreciation of the relationship between languages and other cultures, as well as the student's native culture. Through knowledge and comprehension of other cultures, students become better able to understand other people's points of view, ways of life, and contributions to the world.
