Language Exams

ยป Language Exams

At Chapman, you are required to take language classes as part of your General Education requirements. But if you already know a language besides English proficiently, you can test out of some or all of your language classes with a language exam. We offer two types of language exams:

  • Language Placement Exams, which let you demonstrate your skills in a language so that you are placed into the right class for your level. You cannot take this exam if you have already started taking language classes at Chapman.
  • Language Proficiency Exams, which let you test out of your language requirement. This exam can be taken at any time.

Language Placement Exams

Language Placement Exams will place you in the appropriate level of language class (101, 102 or 201) based on your abilities. They won’t let you test out of your General Education language requirement, but they will make sure you are placed into the right class for your skill level.

Online Language Placement Exams

We offer online Language Placement Exams in:

  • Arabic
  • Chinese
  • French
  • German
  • Italian
  • Japanese
  • Latin
  • Spanish

To take an online Language Placement Exam:

  • Log in to Canvas.
  • Click “Courses” in the left column.
  • Select the Language Placement Exam you want to take.

When you are done with the exam, your score will be manually added to your transcript (so give it a few days). You will then be able to enroll in the appropriate level of language class through your Chapman Student Center.

In-Person Language Placement Exam

We also offer an in-person Language Placement Exam in Greek.

To take a Greek Placement Exam, contact Professor Jared Hammad at hammad@chapman.edu.

Before starting your Placement Exam, keep in mind that:

  • You can only take the Placement Exam once. Make sure you have enough time to complete the whole exam before you start.
  • For the Placement Exam to count, you have to take it before you begin your language classes at Chapman. If you’ve already started taking language classes at Chapman, you are no longer eligible to take the exam.

Language Proficiency Exams let you test out of your General Education language requirement by demonstrating your proficiency in a language other than English.

Before starting your Proficiency Exam, keep in mind that:

  • You have to pass your exam with 201-level proficiency to test out of your language requirement at Chapman.
  • Passing the exam doesn't give you class credit. It just lets you bypass your language requirement.

Other Language Options

Meeting Your Language Requirement with AP/IB Test Scores

If you took Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) language classes in high school, you may be able to fulfill your Chapman language requirement with AP/IB credit. Check our AP credit and IB credit pages to see if you’re eligible.

Waiving Your Language Requirement

U.S. students who completed foreign language in high school will not be able to waive their language requirement at Chapman University. If you are an international student and attended high school outside of the U.S., you may be eligible for the language waiver with additional documentation provided to aps@chapman.edu.
