» Advising Overview

As a Chapman student, you have your own dedicated academic advisor. Your advisor is here to help you make informed decisions about your education and achieve your goals in college.

How advising works at Chapman

An advisor talking to a studentHere are a few things to know about how advising works at Chapman:

  • Your advisor is assigned to you based on your major. Your assigned advisor will be able to help you with questions specific to your major and career path, as well as more general questions. Undeclared majors also have their own advisor.
  • Your advisor can be your point of contact on navigating campus. If you need help with anything related to academics or student life, reach out. Your advisor can help you or direct you to appropriate campus resources.
  • Aside from your main advisor, you may have access to other advisors and campus resources, including:
    • Faculty mentors from your school/college, who can introduce you to research projects and academic opportunities.
    • Peer mentors: current upperclass students who pass on wisdom gained from their personal experience.
    • Specialized advisors for studying abroad, as well as for students on pre-med, pre-health or pre-law tracks.
Not sure who your advisor is?

Not a problem. Use this quick tool to find out and read a bit about them. Then reach out to them or schedule an advising appointment.

When to make an advising appointment

Below are some scenarios where it might be a good idea to make an advising appointment — including one where we strongly recommend you do.

  • Before you arrive at Chapman. As an incoming student, you are strongly encouraged to make at least one appointment with your advisor. During this appointment, you will get to introduce yourself to your advisor, get details on math and language testing and learn how to complete the registration process.
  •  When you are thinking of changing majors or adding a major/minor. This process can be tricky to tackle on your own, and your advisor will be well equipped to help walk you through it and develop an academic plan that works for you.
  • If you are concerned about your academic performance. Your advisor can work with you to address issues you might be having in classes or extracurriculars and find solutions.
  • When you want to prepare for the upcoming semester. Your advisor can help you plan out your classes and read your Program Evaluation to make sure you're staying on track to graduate on time.
Tip: include your ID

When you email your advisor to make an appointment, make sure to include your Chapman ID. This way, your advisor will be able to see your major and schedule, and will be better prepared to work with you.

Advising appointment alternatives

You don't need to contact your advisor or schedule an appointment if you have general questions about academics (i.e., questions with clear, objective answers). For general questions you can:

  • Try our chatbot. You can find it on many pages on our site, including this one (the "Chat with Us" button at the bottom of your screen), so feel free to ask away.
  • Contact your advisor by email. Please also be sure to include your student ID in emails.

However, if you'd like to have a more in-depth discussion or ask more complex questions, always feel free to reach out to your advisor.
