What is Phi Alpha Theta?Phi Alpha Theta

Each semester, Chapman students who have taken at least four history courses and maintained at least a 3.1 GPA in their history courses, and a 3.0 overall GPA are invited to join the Alpha-Mu-Gamma chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the national history honors society.

Once initiated, students become lifelong members of Phi Alpha Theta and are eligible to compete for scholarships, essay contests, and to attend regional and national conferences sponsored by Phi Alpha Theta.  In addition, the campus chapter of Phi Alpha Theta regularly organizes history related events for all Chapman students including lectures, film series, visits to area museums and trips to Washington, D.C.

What students have to say:

"The chapter brings together the students who really love history.  Those whose idea of reading for pleasure is a historical biography, and who get overly excited for specials on the History Channel.  Phi Alpha Theta provides them a forum to experience those things with like-minded peers.  Phi Alpha Theta fostered a stronger sense of camaraderie to students in the history department, and a chance for them to get to know each other better, discuss classwork outside of class and discuss careers in history.  My favorite event was the Grad School Forum, where all Chapman history professors presented their experiences of grad school.  It provided invaluable insight that we couldn't have received from anyone else."  Tenaya Hills, Class of 2006

"Phi Alpha Theta gives students the opportunity to see what history is like outside of the classroom.  We attend conferences, hold film nights, and most importantly, build a community of professors and students to help in understanding history both as a major and as a career."  Jenny Wiegert, Class of 2007

"Phi Alpha Theta activities offer history majors an opportunity to get together and establish connections with their fellow majors and thus form a stronger community within the history department here at Chapman University."  Jen Bicknell, Class of 2006
