English Department Publications

Elephant Tree

Elephant Tree is the annual student magazine of the English department (see online versions below).

Elephant Tree began in 2006, replacing Calliope, which had been the department’s magazine for more than twenty years. The change in name reflected other changes. Whereas Calliope had been the final project in a magazine-production course—English students submitted their writing and English faculty chose the top pieces for each genre—for Elephant Tree all Chapman students are invited to submit their work, not just those in English, and the editors are students (graduate and undergraduate) who volunteer their time and talent. Students have creative control, and each issue publishes 12-15 poems and 4-10 stories. The new name was chosen by the editors of the 2006 issue. After playing with various word combinations, they arrived at Elephant Tree—and then, serendipitously, discovered that not only does such a tree exist, it is native to this Southwestern, Baja Californian area. The tree is resilient yet uncommon.

The deadline for submission is in early December, as are applications to be an editor. In consultation with other English faculty, the magazine’s faculty advisor then constitutes the editorial board for the year’s issue. Please note that since the editors are writers themselves, and because they were chosen for this position, they are still entitled to submit work for the board to review. You may therefore notice that an editor is sometimes also a contributor. Submissions are read in January and February, and in April around 200 copies are printed and freely distributed. After print publication, the contents are also made available online here.

The Panther Newspaper and Prowl Magazine

The University's nationally recognized, award-winning student-produced independent weekly The Panther publishes a print and online edition with no faculty or administrative prior review. Students update the online Panther five days a week with breaking news except during summers and academic breaks. Students interested in working for the Panther or thepantheronline are invited to enroll in Eng. 210 or Eng. 211 to learn the basics or reporting, writing and digital journalism. Successful reporters and photographers are encouraged to apply for paid editorial staff positions (up to $400 weekly for the Panther Editor in Chief). The journalism program also publishes twice annually the university's only student-run full color online-only magazine Prowl and maintains connections to jobs, internships and alumni through its Facebook page.

For more information, please contact the journalism program director Professor Susan Paterno.
