All new students interested in majoring in art must submit the required materials prior to the deadlines set by our Admissions Office. See 2011-2012 deadlines. Please read the following instructions and submit the necessary materials to support your application.

Guidelines for Entrance to the Department of Art and Art Talent Awards

BFA Art and BFA Graphic Design Majors

The Department of Art additional materials are required for students seeking any major within the Department of Art. All applicants should be advised that their applications are considered incomplete until they have submitted a portfolio and accompanying documents.

Final Admission decisions are not made until Art applications have been reviewed and results have been processed. Freshman and Transfer Art applicants must also complete The Common Application (www.commonapp.org), and the Chapman University Supplemental Application.

Step 1: Prepare the following items a through d:

a. A Portfolio of your work. Choose up to 10 examples of your work that best represent your skills, strengths, and interests.

b1. APPLICABLE TO GRAPHIC DESIGN APPLICANTS ONLY: A written Statement of Interest. Prepare a 1-2 page typed essay describing why you want to study art or graphic design at Chapman University. Include in your essay:¡¡ Why art is important to you, any significant experience that has shaped your interest in art, your educational goals and how Chapman University will help you achieve those goals.

b2. APPLICABLE TO STUDIO ART APPLICANTS ONLY: A written Statement of Interest and a written Evaluation of your Work. Both of these should be about 500 words in length.

Statement of Interest:
Describe why you are interested in studying art at Chapman University including artistic and educational goals. The Department of Art at Chapman University is committed to interdisciplinary dialogs, include academic and non-academic interests that influence your art work.

Evaluation of your Work
: Pick the two most successful works in your portfolio and explain what makes them the most significant, including how the formal elements of the works support their meaning.

c. A signed Letter of Recommendation from your most recent art instructor. If a copy is unavailable to you, a hard copy may be mailed to: Department of Art, One University Drive, Orange, CA 92866. The signed letter of recommendation from your most recent art instructor is separate to that requested by the Office of Admissions. Please ensure two letters are prepared and mailed.

d. A recent Photograph of yourself for identification purposes. Professional headshots are not necessary.

Step 2: Please submit all of these materials to: Chapman University, Department of Art, One University Drive Orange, CA 92866. Your portfolio and photograph should be in color and printed on 8 ¨ö x 11 paper. Feel free to include digital copies of your materials by way of disc or flash drive but we need original or hard copy versions submitted. We cannot process your application until all materials are received.

BA Art History Majors

The Department of Art application for the Art History program is not necessary but you are required to follow and complete the standards set in place by the Office of Admissions – see link

APPLICATION DEADLINES: For applicants seeking to apply after the deadlines set, you will be considered on a space and funds available basis only. See 2011-2012 deadlines.

Talent Scholarships in Art
Art majors are automatically considered for talent awards when applying to the program.
