PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS Upcoming interview dates: October 17 and 31, 2009; November 11, 2009; January 16, 18, 23, and 30, 2010; and February 13 and 27, 2010. Those students seeking Early Action must schedule interview appointments in October or November. Students who are unable to come to Chapman in person should call the Art Department office to schedule a phone interview. In certain cases, special interview arrangements may be made through the department office, at the discretion of the department. If you are unable to keep an interview appointment, as a courtesy please contact the department office as soon as possible so that we may make your space available to another prospective student. Applicants to the Department of Art are automatically considered for talent awards. Exhibition Opportunities Chapman students mount department-wide exhibitions at the end of each semester. An outside juror, chosen by the students, awards four “best of show” prizes. BFA Studio Art majors are required to show their work in small group exhibitions as juniors and seniors and BA Art majors show their work in conjunction with the Senior Seminar. Graphic Design majors display their work as juniors in preparation for their senior portfolio presentation, the capstone requirement of the Graphic Design curriculum. When the gallery schedule permits, students install exhibitions of work from current classes, installations and collaborative pieces. Departmental Honors The art department faculty awards departmental honors to students who have produced outstanding work in their area. Requirements for consideration are nomination by their exhibition, portfolio, or thesis committee and a GPA of 3.33 in the major. The Purcell Award The Purcell Award is a distinction of honor presented each year to graduating art majors who have consistently demonstrated a commitment to experimentation in their work, an ability to be articulate about their art and that of others, and have contributed significantly to the life of the Art Department. These students are presented with a memorable book in their area of study. Work Study Students who have been awarded financial aid grants by the university are encouraged to apply for work study positions in the department. Opportunities for employment include positions in the photo lab, Guggenheim Gallery, studio areas, department office, computer lab and visual resource center.
