Travel to Costa Rica and immerse yourself in the daily life and culture of Costa Rica. The travel course is designed to enrich students' knowledge of the ways in which Costa Ricans are addressing social problems such as globalization, sustainable development, women's rights, health, and immigration. The course is offered in collaboration with The Institution for Central American Development Studies (ICADS). A study of language in addition to culture and social issues prepares students to volunteer at selected sites, and appreciate Costa Rican daily life through living with a local family. Part of the course study involves developing Spanish skills, through language groups. Additionally, this course will integrate the connection between social problems, development, and social mobilization among Third World nations. Through learning about the current problems that Costa Ricans face, students will develop an in-depth understanding of the mobilization and organization strategies designed to approach these problems.
