Space and Place

Why do people go to Disneyland? Why do they behave the way they do when there? The anthropology of space and place is designed to give students the opportunity to observe and participate in mini-ethnographic fieldwork. Disneyland is the setting.

The basic assumption of this course is that behavior is culturally constrained by people and things. In the simulated environment of Disneyland, how do people integrate and perform the behaviors they have learned? The architecture, setting, and other social factors of Disneyland encourage certain behaviors and create expectations that allow consumers to be happy while waiting in endless lines, paying exorbitant prices for things, and being herded through the park.

What exactly makes Disneyland the "Happiest Place on Earth"?
