The Peace Lecture Series

Through the generosity of the late Professor Emeritus Paul Delp and trustee Harmon Wilkinson and his wife Nadine, the Delp-Wilkinson Peace Endowment was established to support Peace Studies at Chapman. The endowment provides support for student travel to conferences and study tour classes. It helps provide books and videos to enrich the program. Finally, it supports the Peace Lecture Series that annually brings at least one prominent peacemaker to campus to speak and meet with students.

Past Lecturers
Past lecturers include Nobel Prize winners Jose Ramos-Horta and Betty Williams, activists David Dellinger and Blase Bonpane, scholars Betty Reardon, Cornel West, outspoken former Marine and UN arms inspector Scott Ritter, analyst Phyllis Bennis, former US diplomat in Iraq Ed Peck, journalist Robin Wright and media critic Alexander Cockburn.

These and other events serve to engage students, the Chapman community, and the larger Orange County community around us.

During March, 2001, Professor Cornel West speaks on “Restoring Hope.”

Professor Edward W. Said discusses “Power, Politics and Culture: The United States and the Middle East” in February, 2002.

Mr. Scott Ritter, Former UN Weapons Inspector in Iraq, speaks on “The Coming War with Iraq: How Did We Get Here” in March 2003.

In February, 2004, Ms. Robin Wright, correspondent for The Washington Post, explored the issue of “The Middle East & Militant Islam: The Crucial Next Six Months.”
