Theme Community Opportunities

First Year Experience (FYE) Community

Located on the second Floors of Henley Hall, Pralle-Sodaro Hall, Glass Hall and the third Floor of North Morlan Hall, the First Year Experience Communities provide an opportunity for students to live with other students experiencing similar adjustments to college life. First year students are an essential part of the college community. Their success is contingent upon proper acclimation and orientation into higher education. The FYE program serves as a continuation of the orientation process through out the year through its programming and attention to student needs. Research has shown that directing programming towards first year students greatly increases retention for colleges and universities.

The FYE Resident Advisors plan various activities which are geared towards the specific needs of the first year student which range from homesickness, time management, and stress to navigating college classes or adjusting to living on their own or with a roommate for the first time. Each month a newsletter is sent out informing students of what is going on around campus and recognizing the academic and social achievements of their peers.  The FYE Social Committee also provides an opportunity for students to be leaders in their community by planning events and activities for themselves. Chapman University's First Year Experience is designed to make the student feel comfortable in their new "home" and acclimated to their new independence. For more information about this theme community, contact Richard Marks, Resident Director of Morlan Hall and FYE Advisor at 714.532.6053 (ext. x6053 from a campus phone) or via email at rmarks@chapman.edu

The Substance-Free Community

The Substance free themed community is located on the west side of the 4th floor of Henley Hall. These communities are designated as substance free for all students, regardless of age. This area will specialize in making the most out of the college experience without substance use.

Residents of this community must submit a supplemental application in order to be considered for an assignment within this themed community. In addition, all students selected for an assignment within the substance free themed community must sign a license addendum which states that they will remain substance free while living in the community. If residents violate the addendum, they will face conduct review that may include removal from the community. For more information about this theme community, contact or Mark Lawrence , Resident Director of Henley Hall, at 714-628-7251 (ext. 7251 from a campus phone) or malawren@chapman.edu.

The Fitness/Wellness Community

The Fitness/Wellness community is located on the east side of the fourth floor of Pralle-Sodaro Hall. Designed with an approach to healthy living in mind, the Fitness/Wellness community offers an environment where eating well, being physically active, and taking care of yourself mentally, physically, and emotionally is encouraged. Opportunities to form work out and running groups, working with Dining Services to develop a healthy eating plan, and programming opportunities to engage the body, mind, and spirit will be the focus of the Fitness/Wellness community.

The Fitness/Wellness community is open to all students with an interest in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Students wishing to live in this community must submit a supplemental application and must be selected for a housing assignment within the themed community.  Please note that because the Fitness/Wellness community is geared toward physical, mental, and emotional health, it is also a substance free community meaning that no alcohol is permitted in the Fitness/Wellness community at any time. Therefore, any students selected to live in the Fitness/Wellness community must sign an addendum to their Residence Living License Agreement which states they will remain substance free while living in the community. If residents violate the addendum, they will face conduct review that may include removal from the community.  The staff coordinator of the Fitness/Wellness community is Andy Schuster, Resident Director of Pralle-Sodaro who can be reached at 714.997.6528 (ext. 6528 from a campus phone) or aschuste@chapman.edu.
