FAQ's for University House/Glassell Apartments

These Frequently Asked Questions are geared towards graduate, law and family students. If you are an undergraduate student, please visit our Undergraduate Student page.

Q. Who is eligible to live in the University Houses and Glassell Apartments?
A. The University Houses are primarily reserved for undergraduate and law/graduate single parent and married family students, as well as staff and faculty. Single graduate & law students are given first priority in the Glassell Apartments.

Q. How do I apply to live in the University Houses and/or the Glassell Apartments?
A. If you wish to apply to live in the University Houses, a Waitlist Application Form can be submitted by visiting our Forms page. There is a separate Waitlist Application form for both areas and are listed on the forms page under “Graduate Forms” Unlike applying for the Residence Halls or Davis/Harris Apartments, the $600 security/holding deposit IS NOT due at the time the application is submitted. The $600 security/holding deposit is only required once a property has become available and you have been approved for residency in that property.

Q. How does the waitlist work for the University Houses?
A. The waitlist for the University Houses is not a traditional numbered waiting list. Instead, applicants are  categorized and each category is given a certain level of priority. The categories (in priority order) are as follows: undergraduate married/family, graduate & law married/family, single graduate & law students, single undergraduate students, and faculty & staff. When a University House or a Glassell Apartment becomes available, the Office of Housing and Residence Life will contact all applicants in each respective category. The first applicant that expresses interest and can confirm that they wish to reside in the house or apartment will receive that property.

Q. How does the waitlist for the Glassell Apartments Work?
A. As the Glassell Apartments are primarily for single Graduate & Law Students, they are given top priority on the waitlist. Any other students that submit an application for the Glassell Apartments that is not a Graduate & Law student will be considered only after all Graduate & Law students are contacted on the current Glassell Apartment Waitlist.

Q. Where are the University Houses and Glassell Apartments located?
A. Most of the University Houses are located on various streets surrounding the Chapman campus. There is a large concentration of the houses on Center Street (across from Argyros Forum and adjoining parking lot), Olive Street (on the south side of the Sycamore parking structure), Lemon St. (on the south west side of the Sycamore Structure) in addition, we also have other houses located on other street locations. The Glassell Apartments are located on Glassell Street between University Drive and Walnut Avenue.

Q. What kind of houses are available for rent?
A. The University Houses are various sizes, ranging from studio apartments to three bedroom houses. When applying for a house, it is important to indicate if you are looking for a 1, 2, or 3 bedroom house. However, it should be noted that by choosing a specific number of bedrooms, you are potentially limiting your chances of receiving a University House. For example, if a three bedroom house becomes available and you indicated that you are only interested in a one bedroom house, you may not be contacted for the opportunity to reserve the three bedroom house.

Q. What is the rate for the University Houses and Glassell Apartments?
A. As the University Houses vary in size and amenities, the rates will also vary. Please see our current Housing Rates Sheet located on our Forms page under “Graduate Forms” for the basic house rates. The Glassell apartment rates are also available on the current Housing Rates Sheet.

Q.  Is it possible to schedule a walkthrough of the property?
A.  Yes.  Scheduling a walkthrough is not required but if you choose to see the property before making a decision you may schedule a walkthrough.  If you are interested in scheduling a walkthrough, please contact the Housing Assignments Assistant Michael Wilcox at mwilcox@chapman.edu.

Q. Once I’ve chosen a house, how do I hold the property?
A. If you have decided to reside in the house or apartment that has been offered to you, it may be held by submitting the Houses Application and Credit Check Release. This will hold the house in your name pending the approval of your residency by the Office of Housing and Residence Life.

Q. Is a credit check required to live in the University Houses and Glassell Apartments?
A. Yes.  Once a house/apartment has been offered to you, you must also submit a Credit Check form that is provided to you by the Assistant Director in charge of Housing Assignments.  This will keep your License Agreement in a pending status until your credit check report is received and a reviewed for a final decision.

A. Residents of houses are responsible for payment of all utilities except water and trash removal. The utilities should never be turned off in the houses, as Chapman University pays for the utilities while the house is not occupied. Therefore, when you move into your house, you are responsible for having the utilities service transferred to your name. Residents in Glassell Apartments are only responsible for the payment of phone, cable and internet access.

Q. Are pets allowed in the University Houses or Glassell Apartments?
