Project Roots is all about restoration: the restoration of habitat, wildlife, sustainability, and a connection to place through work at Upper Newport Bay.  Working with the California Coastal Commission’s Community-Based Restoration and Education program, participants engage in a year-long experience of hands-on restoration work and experiential learning opportunities that address the importance of wetland restoration. 

The experience provides participants with opportunities to:

  1. gain an understanding of and ability to explain wetland ecology and functions,

  2. gain an understanding of and ability to explain the human impact at a local and watershed level, and

  3. develop and act upon a connection to place.

The Office of Service-Learning has been a part of this endeavor since Spring 2006, helping plant over 1,000 plants and clearing tremendous amounts of invasive species in California’s largest remaining intact wetland.  For more information contact:
