What is Service-Learning?While many definitions of service-learning exist, the essential components of service-learning can be found in the definition below. Service-learning experiences recognize the educational institution, students, and greater community as equal beneficiaries of efforts focused on both learning and meeting needs identified by the community. In the Office of Service-Learning we also place a strong emphasis on fostering civic engagement amongst all those involved in service-learning experiences. "Service-learning is a form of experiential education in which students engage in activities that address human and community needs together with structured opportunities intentionally designed to promote student learning and development. Reflection and reciprocity are key concepts of service-learning.? Jacoby, Barbara. "Service-Learning in Today's Higher Education." Service-Learning in Higher Education. Ed. Barbara Jacoby, San Francisco: Jossey-Bass, Inc. 1996. 3-25.
