PHI ALPHA DELTA, THE WORLD’S LARGEST FRATERNITY
The Charles Whittaker chapter of Phi Alpha Delta was installed on March 20, 2004 at Chapman University School of Law. The Charles Whittaker chapter is the 189th chapter of Phi Alpha Delta, the world's largest legal fraternity. Phi Alpha Delta is a professional law fraternity composed of law students, attorneys, judges, and educators. With over 200,000 members across the world, we are dedicated to promoting professional competency, service, and achievement within the legal profession. In fact, one out of six attorneys in North America is a member of P.A.D.. P.A.D. has chartered more chapters than any other law fraternity in the world with over 180 Law School Chapters (at ABA-accredited law schools), 95 Alumni Chapters in major metropolitan areas, and over 200 Pre-Law Chapters. A couple celebrated members are William Taft, Woodrow Wilson, Warren Harding, Harry Truman, James Carter, Jr., William Clinton, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Breyer, and Hillary Rodham Clinton. History Founded in 1902 in South Haven, Michigan, Phi Alpha Delta was organized by a group of Chicago area law students in response to a legal controversy over a rule affecting admission to the State Bar. The students believed that law fraternity benefits should be made available to ALL members of the legal profession and soon expanded P.A.D. outside the Chicago area. P.A.D. was the first legal fraternity to remove ALL restrictions on membership regarding race, sex, color, creed, national origin and grade point average. Events Phi Alpha Delta provides a variety of events throughout the school year. Click here to view the tentative 2007-08 Schedule of Events (PDF). Mission Statement The purpose of this Fraternity shall be to form a strong bond uniting students and teachers of the law with members of the Bench and Bar in a fraternal fellowship designed to advance the ideals of liberty and equal justice under law; to stimulate excellence in scholarship; to inspire the virtues of compassion and courage; to foster integrity and professional competence; to promote the welfare of its members; and to encourage their moral, intellectual, and cultural advancement; so that each member may enjoy a lifetime of honorable professional and public service.
