On Friday, January 27th Chapman University's School of Law welcomed John Dean as the guest speaker for the legal symposium entitled, "The 40th Anniversary of Watergate: A Commemoration of the Rule of Law." Among the topics discussed was the issue of government transparency, to which Professor Ronald Rotunda contributed, "We live on leaks, [. . .] Leaks are what keeps the government honest, or prevents them from getting too crooked." Chapman University School of Law is proud to announce that two law students, Laura Moss and Jason Armbruster, have been selected to participate in Chapman's international documentary film program. This summer, over 20 film, law and humanities students will travel to Mozambique to film four documentaries. Professor John Hall adds, "It was a particularly competitive application process this year, with 20 highly qualified law students competing for just one or two spots in the program." Solo Practice University, described as "the leading online educational and professional networking community for lawyers and law students" recently announced its partnership with Chapman University School of Law, which was formed "to help their students and alumni create and build sustainable solo practices." November 2011 Dean Tom Campbell, Ph.D., will direct a new business law emphasis program at the Chapman University School of Law, which will be offered to students beginning spring 2012. “This is my first major initiative as Chapman’s new dean, and I’m giving it my personal direction,” said Dr. Campbell. Chapman students excelled at the regional round of the ABA Arbitration Competition, where the team of Kristin Aoun, Nick Evans, Phil Joo and Damon Pitt reached the semifinal round, losing a split decision by one point—barely missing an opportunity to qualify for the national finals. October 2011 The Chapman University School of Law participated in a questionnaire sent out by the U.S. Department of Justice Access to Justice Initiative. The questionnaire asked law schools to answer two questions: "What is your school doing to support a public service ethic in every student?" and, "What new public service opportunities are you offering in the 2011-2012 academic year?" Read about Chapman’s rankings. Chapman Law Registrar Maryam Isles published an article in this month's Orange County Lawyer Magazine on "The State Bar's Moral Character Application and Requirement." Stressing the need for complete and truthful disclosure in the application, she noted, "In my annual training sessions with the State Bar, one of the topics covered is how unfavorably they look at the lack of candor," she stated. Congratulations to recent Chapman Law grad Jennifer Fry for her acceptance into the Pacific Legal foundation Public Interest Law fellowship program. Jennifer Fry is a 2011 graduate from Chapman Law, where she served as senior symposium editor for the Chapman Law Review and was senior board member of the Federalist Society chapter at Chapman. "My experience as a PLF summer intern, in 2009, solidified my belief that Americans need to work actively at protecting private property rights, promoting individual liberty, and limiting the size and intrusiveness of the federal government," Fry said. The Orange County Weekly featured Chapman Law student George Hartline in an article entitled, "George Hartline Goes from South to South OC," about Hartline's music, work in real estate, and ambitions in school. Hartline was described as "an Orange-by-way-of-Alabama singer/songwriter," and "a man on the grind." The O.C. Weekly wrote: "By night, we know him as the front man of the roots/rock ensemble the Harmless Doves, who released a solid self-titled debut EP this spring. August 2011 Presiding Justice David G. Sills of California’s Fourth District Court of Appeal died on August 23 at the age of 73. Justice Sills was a longstanding member of the Dean’s Council and Board of Visitors at Chapman University School of Law. “Justice Sills was a great friend of the law school at Chapman,” said law school Dean Tom Campbell. “He served on the Board of Visitors for many years and helped us immensely with our trial practice courses. The Chapman Law community grieves with Justice Sills’ family over his loss.” In lieu of flowers, Justice Sills' family has asked that donations in his memory be made to the Chapman University School of Law. Donations will be used to establish the Justice David G. Sills Scholarship Fund that will benefit all Chapman law school students. In an article about Deputy District Attorney Elizabeth Thomas, the Californian.com commented on Chapman's program. Chapman’s Working with Filmmakers Clinic will be credited in “Mamitas,” a feature film to be presented at the Los Angeles Film Festival in June. “Mamitas” is beautifully shot coming-of-age story that revolves around a young Latino player whose budding relationship with a bookish tomboy propels him to find out who he really is. It is based upon the short student film the producer and writer/director created when they were students at Chapman’s Dodge College of Film and Media Arts. Find more information here. May 2011 April 2011 The Student Lawyer highlighted Chapman Career Services in an article entitled "How To Chart Your Career." The article discussed the importance of quality staffing in a law school's career service office when it comes to assisting students in a legal market that it at a historic low. Chapman staffing was described as the "hallmark" of effective counseling. The article described one Chapman student's recent experience where career services went the extra mile for their students: "The career services director sat with me on the phone on a Saturday and went through my résumé and cover letter word for word," Amini relates. "I had e-mailed her late on a Friday and she did not hesitate or wait until Monday to get back to me." Chapman’s Working with Filmmakers Clinic is credited in a film to be presented at the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles. (See http://indianfilmfestival.org/) Through the clinic, Chapman Law students work directly with low budget independent filmmakers and serve as production legal counsel. Chapman Law Students in the Working with Filmmakers Clinic were also credited in the critically-acclaimed drama “I Will Follow”, which was released March of this year. March 2011 The Chapman AMVETS Legal Clinic was featured in the Centre Daily Times in an article entitled, “AMVETS’ Pro Bono Legal Clinic Fills Veteran Need”. The article discussed the recent $500,000 grant by AMVETS for pro bono legal aid for veterans helped by AMVETS Legal Clinic. The article highlighted the involvement of Chapman Law students. “Our law students benefit from getting to work on real cases that can change veterans’ lives for the better,” said Professor Kyndra Rotunda, a former Army JAG officer and current Executive Director of the AMVETS Legal Clinic at Chapman. “We are handling a wide range of legal issues, including auto accident cases, VA claims, lease disputes, disability claims, breach of contract actions, and other legal issues stemming from multiple deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. Many of these matters would otherwise go unlitigated because service members often can’t afford private lawyers and JAG Officers are barred from representing soldiers in private civil legal claims. The scholarship is sponsored by Morrison & Forester, LLP. Seven Chapman Law students received recognition in a London mediation competition hosted by BPP Law School and sponsored by the International Academy for Alternate Dispute Resolution. Over 110 competitors from 23 law schools from four continents comprised the 34 teams that participated in the competition. In the individual awards, Scott McIntyre was second in the advocate-client category, Whitney Stefko was third in the mediator category, Mason Waite was eighth in the mediator category, Dan Chudleigh and Mason were ninth in the advocate-client category, and Samantha Kohler was eleventh in the mediator category. The Chapman Law team comprised of Stephen Fresch, Chris Koras and Whitney Stefko were fourth and the team comprised of Dan Chudleigh, Samantha Kohler, and Mason Waite were fifth in the mediation team category. Dan, Sam, and Mason also finished sixth in the advocate-client team category. A Chapman student team made the final four at the ABA Criminal Justice Trial Advocacy Competition in Chicago. In the invitation-only competition involving 22 teams from around the country, Jess Travis, Jeremy Jass, John Bishop, and Alex Khoury made a strong team. Chapman mediation advocacy team of Tina Hanley, Scott McIntyre, Dhruv Sharma, and Stephanie Brou made it to the quarterfinals of the international mediation advocacy tournament in Toronto in March. Chapman ABA National Appellate Advocacy Competition team of Kelly Manley, Tom Nolin, and Jon Mason will be taking Chapman to the national finals of that competition for the first time since 2008. The Chapman team made it to one of the largest and most prestigious moot court competitions in the country, with over 200 teams competing nationwide, and only 24 making it to the national finals. The national finals will take place in Chicago. February 2011 Congratulations to Kyndell Paine ('10) who, after a series of six interviews, has been offered the position of Manager of Government Relations for the Disneyland Resort. Kyndell will begin full time on February 28. January 2011 Every fall hundreds of USC alumni matriculate to various law schools across the nation. Chapman's Moot Court team traveled to Seattle this month for the regional round of the Thomas Tang Moot Court Competition. The final round was Chapman vs. Chapman! The team of Ruben Escobedo and Samantha Kohler won the regional, and their brief placed third. The team of John Bishop and Jesse Cox placed second overall, but took home the second place brief award and John won the top advocate award. Both teams advanced to nationals in Los Angeles for the next round.
Chapman Law School won Best Brief Award at Stetson University College of Law’s third annual National Pretrial Competition this October. Thirteen law schools from across the country sent students to compete on October 8-9 in Gulfport, Florida. Read about Chapman’s success in the National Pretrial Competition. September 2010 Two Chapman professors participated in the “National People of Color Legal Scholarship Conference” this September at Seton Hall in New Jersey. Professor Dexter and panelist at the Conference discussed tax policy in a “post-racial” era. Professor Francine Lipman presented her paper, “It’s A Matter of Life or Death: A Model for the Most Important Financial Decision for Working Poor Families in America.” Chapman is excited to announce the commencement speakers for 2011 and 2012. U.S. Attorney Andre Birotte, Jr. will be the commencement speaker for 2011. Birotte is the son of Haitian immigrants and was recently sworn in as the U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California. Appointed by President Obama and confirmed by the U.S. Senate, Birotte is responsible for all federal litigation in the counties of Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura. Prior to his appointment as U.S. Attorney, Birotte served as Inspector General of the Los Angeles Police Department. Justice Tani Gorre Cantil-Sakauye will be the commencement speaker for 2012. Cantil-Sakauye was recently nominated by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to serve as Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court. The three-member Commission of Judicial Appointment comprised of retiring Chief Justice Ronald George, Attorney General Jerry Brown and appellate court justice Joan Dempsey Klein unanimously confirmed her to the California Supreme Court in August. If her nomination is confirmed by the voters in November, Cantil-Sakauye will become the first Filipino and Asian-American chief justice in California history as well as the first woman chief justice. July, 2010 May 2010 Chapman’s mediation team triumphed in the International Academy of Dispute Resolution's Law School Mediation Tournament in Chicago. Chapman competed among 36 teams (108 students) from around the world, including India, Germany, England, Scotland, Canada and the US. Chapman's teams did an amazing job: Cynthia Guzman, Stephanie Brou and Chris Koras placed 1st overall for the Attorney/Client Division, Cynthia Guzman, Chris Koras and Stephanie Brou placed 4th overall for the Mediation Division, Nico Cirigliano, Kyndell Paine and Lisa Fiance placed 5th overall for the Attorney/Client Division, Chris Koras placed 8th in the Top 10 Outstanding Mediator Division, and Cynthia Guzman and Stephaine Brou placed 9th in the Outstanding Attorney/Client Division. Chapman’s Elder Law Clinic, directed by Professor Kurt Eggert, was featured in a Daily Journal article entitled Experience Comes With Age. "Helping these people, who really have no other place to turn, is very satisfying" said Chapman Law student Stephen Honda about participating in the clinic. Read the article about the Elder Law Clinic. Chapman’s Outlaw Program was highlighted in an article in the Orange County Register about graduating families and their accomplishments. Graduating Chapman Law student and pioneer of Outlaw, Tiffany Chang, discussed the support from the campus and the continuation of the club. "I've been involved in what I think was a transformation of the law school and the university as a whole. I'm really grateful for it” said Chang. The Newport Beach Film Festival's selection committee reviewed more than 2,000 films and selected approximately 350 films from 47 countries to screen. Out of those remaining 350, only one film won the audience award for best U.S. Feature - "Below the Beltway." Congratulations to Professor Kathy Heller and all of the students involved in doing the legal work on "Below the Beltway" as part of the law school's Entertainment Contracts Clinic. Chapman played an instrumental role in the production of this award-winning film project and provided our students with an invaluable clinical experience that will help launch their own entertainment law careers. Chapman Law alumnus and law school Advisory Board member Scott Levitt is seeking the Republican nomination to be California’s next Lieutenant Governor. Levitt graduated from the law school a semester early in 2003 with an emphasis in Real Estate, Land Use, and Environmental Law, and returned several years later to pursue a Masters in Law degree (LL.M.), specializing in Business Law and Economics. Levitt has served as Chief General Counsel for a mid-size industrial contractor and real estate developer and as a Sr. Accountant and Finance Manager for six years at a residential real estate development company and contractor. Before entering the real estate industry, Levitt served in several management positions for various companies in the food processing industry. The Chapman Entertainment Law clinic is credited in the film "Below the Beltway," which will premiere at the 2010 Newport Beach Film Festival. Christian McGuigan, a third-year student who worked in the clinic last summer, is also credited in the film as an associate producer. The film festival runs April 22-29. Chapman Law students were involved with the Voltage Pictures and Summit Entertainment film "The Hurt Locker," which won the 2010 Academy Award for best picture. Colin Nimsz (Class of 2009) interned with Nicholas Chartier at Voltage Pictures, and Regan Pedersen (Class of 2009) and Eva Feder (Class of 2010) interned at Summit Entertainment. Chapman Law students Katrina Jaffe, a second-year student, and Julie Anne Ines, a first-year student, have been offered summer internships with the Open Society Justice Initiative in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Jaffe will be working primarily on issues relating to the Khmer Rouge tribunal, and Ines will be working on a media rights project. They are the fifth and sixth Chapman law students to intern in Cambodia in recent years, including one other at OSJI, making Chapman one of the most heavily represented U.S. law schools in that vibrant international human rights community. Chapman Law third-year student Habib Hanna had his article on IRC 104(a)(2) "Heads I Win, Tails You Lose: The Disparate Treatment of Similarly Situated Taxpayers Under the Personal Injury Income Tax Exclusion" published in the new edition of the Chapman Law Review, and highlighted in the TaxProf Blog. March 2010 First-year student Branigan Robertson, who won Access Group’s $10,000 “My Inspiration” scholarship contest last year, was spotlighted in a recent issue of the ABA’s student magazine. “Robertson is not the cutthroat law student in the Paper Chase, according to his friends. ‘Quite the opposite, actually,’ says first-year student and classmate Erik Beck. ‘I remember expressing my fear of getting called on in class. [Robertson] said there are worse things in the world.’” Read the article here. Orange County Register columnist and Chapman Law first-year student Frank Mickadeit covered the recent debate between former Chapman Law visiting professor John Yoo and former Congressman Bob Barr about the limits of presidential power hosted by the law school's Federalist Society. "Knew something was up when more Chapman cops than I knew were on the force swarmed into the Law School at lunchtime Tuesday. It surveys the different orientations of law and religion in world history, and set out how the religion clauses in the First Amendment define the relation between the two institutions in our own culture Erin Riley, Assistant Director of Career Services, was quoted in an article on Yahoo’s HotJobs section among other “industry insiders” on how to get your resume read. “Be results-oriented. ... The Fellowship, named for Chapman’s Nobel laureate professor, is designed to encourage advanced LL.M. study and research in law, economics, business and related fields. November 2009 Chapman Law's ADR team, comprised of Lisa Fiance, Aaron Goben, and Kyndell Paine, won first place at the National Mediation Competition in Liverpool, England. Kyndell took the second place individual mediator award and Aaron took the third place individual award. This was the first UK National Mediation Competition with three US teams (Lewis University, Illinois; Drake School of Law, Illinois and Chapman) and ten UK Law School teams (Westminster University; Liverpool John Moores University; Edinburgh University; The College of Law – Bloomsbury, BVC; BPP Law School - London, BVC; Leeds Metropolitan University; Kingston University; The University of Strathclyde; Manchester Metropolitan University; Staffordshire University). A documentary film co-created by Chapman 2L student Roxana Amini was screened at a special event entitled "Destination Africa," held at the Dodge School of Film and Media Arts on November 18, 2009. The film was one of three short documentary movies created by film/law/humanities students during a trip to Cameroon in the summer of 2009, as part of the ongoing human rights documentary program at Chapman University. The show focused on alternatives to foreclosure and provided loan modification information. Monica is an expert in the mortgage industry and is extremely knowledgeable on prime and sub-prime financing. Learn more... An Orange County Register article on October 8, 2009 reported on Chapman law students working to get Chapman alumnus Emmett Ashford recognized in the national Baseball Hall of Fame. Mr. Ashford played baseball for Chapman in the 1940s and was the first black umpire in the major leagues. University President Jim Doti, Adrienne Bratton (Emmett Ashfords daughter), and Rachel Robinson (widow of Jackie Robinson) have all written letters to encourage Emmett to be on the Hall of Fame ballot. Read article… September 2009 On September 28, The Shark, reported on the recent “Battle of the Law School Deans" at Chapman University. The piece entitled, “Rivalry Could Be Healthy for Chapman and Irvine Law Schools” discussed the September 24 debate between Chapman’s Dean John Eastman and UCI law school Dean Erwin Chemerinsky, and their “friendly rivalry” arising from their differing interpretations of the U.S. Constitution. The author noted that the debate brings an interesting ideological diversity to Orange County that may be attractive to prospective law students from around the country. Read article…
The Journal of Criminal Justice’s symposium on “Specialty Courts in Criminal Justice: Challenges and Opportunities” was the subject of a Los Angeles Daily Journal article entitled, “All Pros, No Cons for Innovative Specialty Courts at Symposium.” The symposium explored the unique challenges and opportunities of “specialty courts” such as drug courts, DUI courts, mental health courts, and domestic violence courts. These courts are designed to address not only the criminal charges but also the underlying risk factors that contribute to the cycle of offending. According to the article, the symposium discussion mostly approved of the specialty courts but also discussed some suggestions for improvement. Chapman law registrar, Maryam Isles, is serving on the Board of Directors of The National Network of Law School Officers (NNLSO), a nonprofit, professional organization that addresses the concerns and issues of registrars and admissions officers. NNLSO is the only professional organization for law school registrars, has up to 600 members, and has over 130 ABA-accredited law schools participating in it. July 2009 The California department of AMVETS, a national nonprofit veterans support group founded by World War II veterans, approved a 5-year $2.5 million commitment to Chapman University School of Law’s Military Personnel Law Center and AMVETS Legal Clinic. Their generous donation will help the law center and clinic to continue providing free legal representation to military veterans, service members and California’s 200,000 military families who face private disputes not covered by the Judge Advocate General (JAG) Corps. A Los Angeles Times article entitled, “Emmett Ashford made history; will he make Hall of Fame?” featured the late Chapman alumnus Emmett Ashford, who broke the color barrier for major league umpires back in 1965. His daughter, Adrienne Bratton, with support from Chapman students and Jackie Robinson’s widow, is trying to get him into the Hall of Fame. Keller, a Board of Visitors member and partner at Keller Rackauckas LLP in Irvine, was the subject of an Orange County Register article entitled, “Irvine lawyer helped arrange teen cancer patient’s return home.” Keller played an instrumental role in returning Daniel Hauser and his mother to Minnesota after almost a week on the run from court-ordered chemotherapy treatments for Daniel’s Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The article noted that Keller contacted the FBI and Minnesota’s Brown County Sheriff to ensure that Daniel’s mother would not be arrested if they returned. Read article … April 2009 March 2009 Chapman University School of Law alumnus Miles Fuller was involved in the successful defense of co-founder and chief technology officer of the Broadcom Corporation, Henry Samueli, in the recent Samueli v. Commissioner of Internal Revenue Tax Court decision concerning a securities transfer agreement. Read article ....Second year law student Tiffany Chang was featured in an Orange County Register article entitled, “Gay-marriage issue both scholarly, personal.” The article discusses the impact of Proposition 8 on gay and lesbian couples. Chang said that it is difficult for people to understand what it means to be treated like a second-class citizen until they find themselves in that position. She states, “Having it not affect your life, having it not affect your rights, it's easy to kind of just dismiss. You don't really know until you're there.” Read article ... A team of talented law and film students were selected by the Association of Media & Entertainment Counsel (AMEC) to produce a video celebrating the Fifth Anniversary of AMEC and the Counsel of the Year Awards. The proposal, which includes the team’s video about Chapman, was selected over proposals submitted by USC and UCLA. This is a great opportunity for these students to work directly with executives at entertainment companies and partners at entertainment law firms. The law students participating on the team are Serra Aladag, Colin Nimsz, and Jessica Tincopa; participating film school students are Sanyukta Kaza, Molly Machacek (film school faculty and law), and Drew Moe. Chapman's Mock Trial Board won the ABA-LSD National Arbitration Competition in San Antonio, Texas this past weekend. The student team of Jimmy Blalock, Brett Corson, Meghan O'Brien Taylor, and Arlinda Witko finished third in the preliminary rounds, advancing to the final rounds where they outscored teams from Louisiana State University and the University of Missouri—Columbia. The team was coached by Professor Nancy Schultz and alumna Leila Eftekari (’08). Alternate, Matt Kellond, also provided invaluable assistance in the preparation process. Chapman first-time takers of the July 2008 California Bar Exam achieved the highest pass rate in the law school's history, continuing a strong upward trend. The 77% overall pass rate was complemented by strong gains in other areas, including a 91% pass rate for the top 75% of the graduating class and a 100% pass rate by members of Chapman Law Review. Chapman Law's student organization, Outlaw, organized and co-sponsored with the Orange County Equality Coalition ("OCEC") a forum entitled, "Prop 8 Passed: What Next?" on Monday, November 24. Jayne Kacer, Assistant Dean of Student Affairs and a faculty sponsor of Outlaw, moderated the event, which included professors, students and members of OCEC who addressed key issues in the Prop 8 battle. October 2008 Chapman School of Law’s admission statistics continue to get more selective. In 2007, the school offered admission to 875, and enrolled 192. In 2008, Chapman offered admission to only 721 candidates, and seated 200. Distinguished Visiting Professor of Law Richard Falk presented "Debating International law Since 9/11: Principled and Pragmatic Controversies," at a Chapman Dialogue this Saturday. An audience of close to a hundred attended the event, including Lucy Reed the president of the American Society of International Law (ASIL) and Betsy Andersen, ASIL's executive director. The School of Law is exploring a first-of-its-kind law clinic on the West Coast aimed at serving military personnel and their families, providing them with free legal advice and representation in civil matters. The program would be a "safety net" for members of the military, supporting the Judge Advocate General, or JAG, corps and tackling cases that military lawyers do not handle or are unable to because of a backlog. The Los Angeles Daily Journal published two op-eds written by Chapman Law students analyzing the presidential candidates' health care proposals. In a full page point-counterpoint piece that appeared in the October 17, 2008 issue, "A Healthy Debate" featured the opinions of 3L student Shirley Peng and 2L student Edward Reid. Peng noted that John McCain's plan only appeals to the young, who need it least; while Reid felt Barack Obama's plan was economically unfeasible. Chapman University School of Law continues to rank among the nation's best in Princeton Review's Best 174 Law Schools, 2009 Edition. Chapman retained its Top 10 status in the “Quality of Life (#3)” “Professors Rock (Legally Speaking) (#7),” and “Best Classroom Experience (#3)” categories. Regarding the first few weeks of law school, Werner stated, “It's definitely given me, even in the first two weeks, a very realistic impression of myself . . . I'm really shifting my trust from my intellect to my work ethic. The School of Law recently hosted leading scholars from Harvard and Yale as part of its Chapman Dialogues Distinguished Lecture Series, which provides a forum for discussion and debate on a wide range of subjects and from diverse philosophical perspectives. Learn more... First Year law student, Ruby Banipal, was elected as Outreach Chair for West Region of the new Ms. JD National Women Law Students' Organization. Ms. JD, a national non-profit organization, held a Leadership Summit in New York City on April 4th and 5th. The purpose of the summit was to bring together law students from around the country to form a national organization of women law students. The event was attended by approximately 100 students from over 60 law schools with representatives in attendance from over 30 states. First year law student, Ruby Banipal, represented Chapman at the Summit. The event was sponsored by Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz LLP. The event kicked off with addresses by Chief Judge Judith Kaye of the New York Court of Appeals who spoke on the challenges that still exist for women in the legal profession and Lynn Hecht Schafren who spoke on how far women lawyers have come to date. Students participated in a networking luncheon led by Axiom Legal and the event closed with inspiring remarks by Dahlia Lithwick, a senior editor and legal correspondent for Slate and the keynote speaker, Professor Barbara Babcock, the first woman professor at Stanford Law School. Ms. Banipal was elected to the regional position of Outreach Chair for the West region, and will be serving on this committee. For more information about the organization, visit www.ms-jd.org. After winning the regional competition in Las Vegas last month, the moot court team of Katia Benthale, Rob Webster, and Matt Wechter competed in the national finals of the ABA National Appellate Advocacy Competition in Chicago. This competition is the largest and most prestigious in the country and nearly 180 teams competed in regions throughout the nation. Chapman was one of only a couple of schools in the country who had a team in the national finals for the second consecutive year. The team advanced past the first day of competition, outlasting ten other schools in the national finals. Though the team narrowly lost in an elimination round by less than two points, the results put Chapman as one of this year’s top fifteen moot court teams in the country! Special thanks to one of last year’s regional champions and alumni, Marcus Garrett, for accompanying the team to Chicago and helping with logistics and coaching. In addition, Chapman Law successfully defended its title at the California Bar Environmental Negotiation Competition this past weekend. The second-year team of Katie Henggeler and Alex Hanson added to their recent hardware from the mediation competition by winning the negotiation competition as well. This is the third time in the past six years a Chapman Law team has won this competition. March 2008 At the American Association for Justice Trial Advocacy Competition, Chapman’s team of Luigi Monteleone, Michael Delaney, Joel Griffith, and Jeremy Katz finished 6th overall out of 15 teams. For the second year in a row, Chapman’s Duberstein Bankruptcy Moot Court Competition team made the "sweet 16" at this a large and prestigious competitionThe team was Alex Brewsaugh, Adam Luetto, and Jessica Blair. For the second year in a row, Chapman’s ABA National Appellate Advocacy Competition team is going to national finals and for the first time ever, we got both teams into the semifinal round. The team of Katia Benthale, Rob Webster, and Matt Wechter will be traveling to Chicago next month for the nationals. Katia also earned an individual award as the Third Place Advocate. The team of Sarah Mitchell, Arlinda Witko, and Brandon Sylvia (brief writer) unfortunately lost in the semi-final round to a team from Texas Wesleyan that eventually earned a place at the national finals. This is one of the largest and most prestigious moot court competitions in the country, with 178 teams competing at the regional level, and only 24 teams earning places at the national finals. On March 13, 2008, the School of Law's Center for Global Trade and Development hosted its annual symposium at Kennedy Hall. On February 22, the annual Barrister’s Ball and PILF Silent Auction (also known as the "law prom") was held at the Westin South Coast Plaza Hotel. PILF thanks everyone who donated items for the auction, especially Professors Henry Noyes and Tom Bell whose “poker night” donation was the high bid of the evening, yielding $1,400 for PILF summer grants. Congratulations also to Professor Matt Parlow who was selected “Professor of the Year” by the students. On February 20, the NeXus editorial board, under the faculty supervision of Professor Hugh Hewitt, held a panel on immigration, which brought to campus several prominent scholars, including Bill Piatt, former Dean of St. Mary’s University Law School, and University of Florida Law Professor Robert Moffat. Dressed in Halloween attire, more than 60 members of the law school community treated the children at Orangewood to a wide variety of activities including juggling, pumpkin bowling, pin the spider on the web, pumpkin painting, pumpkin musical chairs, Halloween manicures, and eyeball races. Thanks also to everyone who donated healthy snacks and funds to help make the day a hit with the boys and girls at Orangewood. The School of Law appreciates the commitment to all who contributed to this day of service! 
A rainbow-colored gay pride banner hung across the entrance to Chapman University's Leatherby Libraries as part of the "Love Makes a Family" traveling photo exhibit of families with lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) members. Professors Kyndra and Ronald Rotunda attended the Iraq Star Benefit on October 4 in Los Angeles. Iraq Star is a non-profit organization that provides reconstructive surgery to service members who have sustained war injuries. More than 40,000 men and women have returned wounded from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Although the army provides prosthetic limbs and surgery to relieve scarring from burns, many soldiers endure traumatic physical and mental affects from their injuries. Iraq Star provides necessary surgeries to help them regain a sense of normalcy and confidence to continue their post-war lives.
1L Branigan Robertson was the grand prize winner and $10,000 law school scholarship recipient of Access Group’s video contest entitled “What Inspired Me to Go to Law School.” In the quirky and insightful winning video, Robertson stated that he wants to be “the last defense for those in distress.” 
Two members of Chapman's Student Bar Association Executive Board received important recognition at the American Bar Association 9th Circuit Conference in San Diego this month. Ariana Anderson, a third year student and Chapman's ABA Representative, received the coveted, and extremely competitive, Bronze Key award for her outstanding efforts in getting Chapman Law students involved in the ABA. The award recognizes that Chapman has achieved the most improved circuit membership in the Ninth District for the 2008-09 school year. Also, second year student, Ruby Banipal, won the election for the Circuit Governor. Ruby will be in charge of overseeing all ABA matters in the Ninth District, working daily with all 13 Ninth District law schools that includes Chapman, Loyola, Pepperdine, UCLA, and USC. It was a tough election that saw Ruby win in a tie breaker vote. 
Chapman third year law student Serra Aladag was featured in this month’s ABA Student Lawyer magazine. Last summer Aladag became the first legal intern to work at CNBC’s office in London. The article discusses Aladag’s previous experience in entertainment law and how the CNBC opportunity gave her a chance to work on high-impact international media projects, including licensing, distribution, and risk management. Aladag comments, “Entertainment is global . . . I think the future of the entertainment industry will involve and require more individuals with an international perspective.”

On June 12, 2008, Chapman University announced that Tom Campbell, former Congressman and current dean and professor of business at UC Berkeley, will be the inaugural Presidential Fellow, joining the school of law for a two year distinguished visitorship. 
On April 11, 2008, the Orange County Register reported on the $376,000 federal grant earmarked for Chapman's Family Violence Clinic.
