Rennard Strickland was the 2007-2008 Fletcher Jones Distinguished Visiting Professor of Law at the Chapman University School of Law during the spring 2008 semester. He is Professor Emeritus of Law at the University of Oregon School of Law, where he previously served as Dean from 1997 to 2002 and was the Philip H. Knight Professor of Law. He received his B.A. from Northeastern State College, his J.D. from the University of Virginia, his M.A. from the University of Arkansas, and his S.J.D. from the University of Virginia.

A legal historian of Osage and Cherokee heritage, Dean Strickland is considered a pioneer in introducing Indian law into university curriculums. An authority on Native American Law, Dean Strickland has written and edited more than 35 books, including the widely acclaimed, Tonto's Revenge. He is frequently cited by courts and scholars for his work as revision editor and editor in chief of the Handbook of American Indian Law, a seminal work in the field.

Dean Strickland has been involved in the resolution of a number of significant Indian cases. He was the founding director of the Center for the Study of American Indian Law and Policy at the University of Oklahoma. He is the first person to have served both as president of the Association of American Law Schools and as chair of the Law School Admissions Council. He is also the only person to have received both the Society of American Law Teachers (SALT) Award and the American Bar Association's Spirit of Excellence Award.

Dean Strickland has taught at numerous universities, including the University of Arkansas, the University of Oklahoma, the University of Wisconsin, the University of Washington, St. Mary's University, the University of Tulsa, the University of West Florida, and Southern Illinois University.
