Elizabeth L. MacDowell earned her BA, summa cum laude, in Political Science with a minor in Women's Studies from California State University, Hayward (now Cal State East Bay), where she co-founded and chaired the school's first Women's Studies Association. She then attended the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law, and was Recent Developments Editor of the Berkeley Women's Law Journal before obtaining her JD in 1999. Subsequently, Professor MacDowell practiced business litigation in the Los Angeles offices of Heller Ehrman and Weston Benshoof before going into private practice in 2002, where her practice focused on the representation of victims of domestic violence in all aspects of family law. Professor MacDowell has published on the interrelationships between legal education, doctrine, and practice in marginalized communities.
