Boren Graduate Fellowships

Description:

Boren Fellowships, named for David L. Boren and funded by the National Security Education Program (NSEP), support students pursuing the study of languages, cultures, and world regions that are critical to U.S. interests (including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin American and the Caribbean, and the Middle East). Study in the United States, Western Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand is not permitted.  The program promotes ethnic, racial, and gender diversity and gives special consideration to students from science, engineering, and business backgrounds.

Service Requirement:  An award recipient must work for the federal government in a position with national security responsibilities for one year (or the duration of assistance provided).

Eligibility:

Applicants must be U.S. citizens and must be enrolled in or admitted to a graduate degree program at an accredited university in the United States.  Successful applicants will demonstrate academic excellence and potential to succeed in the proposed program; a commitment to international education as a means of fulfilling academic and career goals; an interest in and an aptitude for language; a comprehensive, clear, and feasible proposal; the ability to adapt to a different cultural environment; a cogent explanation of the relevance of the proposed study to U.S. national security; and a commitment to federal service.

Since NSEP encourages students to study in countries whose languages are less commonly taught at U.S. institutions, it is anticipated that many students may not be familiar with the language of their chosen country. Prior study of another language will serve as an indication of interest and aptitude.  Note:  Study of a common language (Spanish or French) is permissible only when it is at an advanced level of competency or combined with the study of applied science or engineering.  At the time of application, determination of language level will be self-assessed.  The self-assessed competency level of grant recipients will be verified by testing.

Award:

This fellowship provides support for overseas or domestic study or both.  The maximum award for overseas study is $12,000 per semester for up to two semesters. A maximum of $12,000 is available for a program of domestic study only. The maximum level of support for a combined overseas and domestic program is $30,000.
