Emptying the Deleted Items Folder
When you delete an email in Outlook, it is actually moved to the "Deleted Items" folder. The Deleted Items folder is a sort of holding container for discarded email. Unless one takes measure to control this folder, it will grow substantially and store months of unneeded email. Fortunately, emptying the deleted items folder is quite easy.

STEP 1:
Before you empty your deleted items folder, it is recommended you look through it and make sure there is no email you need inside. Once deleted from the deleted items folder, emails become irretrievable.
To do this, simply select the "Deleted Items" folder from the Folder List portion of Outlook. You can browse the contents like any email folder in the window on the right. |

|
STEP 2:
Again, the Mailbox Cleanup Wizard is going to help us empty our deleted items folder. To access the wizard, go to the "Tools" menu and select the "Mailbox Cleanup..." button. |
 |
|
STEP 3:
In the Mailbox Cleanup window, select the "Empty" button by the Deleted Items icon.
Note: This will permanently delete all the emails in the deleted items folder. |
 |
You have successfully emptied your deleted items folder! Click close and OK to exit the wizard. By keeping your deleted items folder empty and making sure you only discard unneeded emails, you can improve the performance of your Outlook by not having a folder full of email you thought you already deleted!
