Configuring Outlook Express

Launch Outlook Express.

Once the program is running, click on "Tools" in the menu bar.

Click on "Accounts" in the menu list.

The "Internet Accounts" window will open.  Click on the "Add" button and select "Mail".

Enter your name as you would like it to appear on your outgoing mail next to "Display name" and click "Next".

Enter your full Chapman e-mail address next to "E-mail address". If you do not have this information you may come by the Help Desk in the basement of the Leatherby Libraries or call (714) 997-6600.

Click "Next".

Make sure the incoming mail server is set to a "IMAP" server.

Under "Incoming mail" type in "imap.chapman.edu"

Under "Outgoing mail server"  type in "smtp.chapman.edu".

Please note: If you are using an external ISP (Internet Service Provider, such as AOL, Earthlink, SBC, etc.) and are not using Chapman dial-up, you must contact your Internet Service Provider and ask what their SMTP server's address is. You then fill that address into the "Outgoing mail (SMTP) server" box.

Click "Next".

Enter your Chapman User Name next to "Account name"  Your user name is the portion of your Chapman email address that comes before "@chapman.edu" (i.e. enter "doe100" if the email address is "doe100@chapman.edu").

Enter your Chapman email password in the "Password" field. If you wish, you may place a checkmark next to "Remember password" so that you won't be prompted to enter your password each time you check your email. It is important to note that if you check this box, anyone using your computer will be able to see your email.

Click "Next".

Important! Outlook Express will remove copies of your e-mail from the server once you have downloaded them to your computer. This means that they will only be available on the computer you are using, and will no longer be available through WebMail. If you do not want this to happen, go to the "Tools" menu, then choose "Accounts." Under the Mail tab, choose your e-mail account, and click "Properties." A new window will open up and you will see a series of tabs across the top. Choose the "Advanced" tab, and then click the box next to "Leave a copy of messages on the server." This will enable you to access your e-mail account from both the computer with Outlook Express installed on it, as well as through WebMail.

Your Outlook Express is now configured.  Simply click "Finish" and you are ready to check your email.
