Kathuria_RDr. Ravi Kathuria, associate professor of operations management at the Argyros School of Business and Economics presented two papers at the Sixty-seventh Annual National Meeting of the Academy of Management held in Philadelphia, PA, August 2007. The first paper, “Strategic Consensus: Evidence from a Developing Nation,” examined the alignment of strategic priorities between two levels of managers in India. The second, “Environmental Scanning and Corporate Strategy: Differences between High Tech and Low Tech Firms,” evaluates the impact of technology intensity on firms’ entrepreneurial orientation in response to a change in the business environment.


Adibi_EDr. Esmael Adibi, director of the A. Gary Anderson Center for Economic Research is appointed to the State Controller's Economic Advisory Council.

As part of an initiative to collect the best information possible on California’s financial health and trends, State Controller John Chiang today named seven California economic experts to a new Controller’s Council of Economic Advisors. The panel will advise the Controller on emerging strengths and vulnerabilities in California’s economy, major issues and trends that may affect the State’s fiscal health, and how to make the best use of limited government revenues and resources.

“These advisors include leading economic experts in subjects ranging from intellectual capital to mortgage debt instruments, and I am eager to hear their input and advice on a broad cross-section of economic matters affecting our State,” Chiang said. “I am extremely grateful that economics professionals of such high caliber are willing to volunteer their time and their expertise to help keep California on the road to fiscal health.”


Tuggle_DDr. Francis D. (Doug) Tuggle, professor of information systems, has been elected to the Board of Advisors of a brand-new university, the University of Creative Leadership and Entrepreneurship, in Breda, Holland.


Shukla_PDr. P.K. Shukla, Director of the Leatherby Center for Entrepreneurship and Business Ethics, has been elected to serve on the Board of Directors of the Orange County Forum. The mission of the Orange County Forum is to provide a premier educational public affairs forum for today’s thought leaders and headline makers to discuss current local, state, national and international issues of importance to the Orange County Community.


Kathuria_RDr. Ravi Kathuria, associate professor of operations management at the Argyros School of Business and Economics has two papers forthcoming. First, “Environmental Influences on Corporate Entrepreneurship: Executive Perspectives on the Internet” is scheduled to appear in the International Entrepreneurship and Management Journal, Volume 3 Issue 2.The second paper "Organizational Alignment and Performance: Past, Present and Future" will appear in Management Decision, Volume 45 Issue 3 (formerly Journal of Management History), which is scheduled for publication in May 2007.


Turk_TDr. Tom Turk, associate professor of strategic management, recently delivered the Keynote Address at the China International Forum on Enterprise Culture in Guangzhou, China. More than 500 Chinese business, government and academic leaders attended the Forum, where Dr. Turk delivered a presentation entitled “Innovation in Large Organizations: Entrepreneurial Approches to Energy Conservation and Environmental Protection.” The speech was also covered extensively in the local press and was featured in the Nanfang Daily.


Machan_T Libertarianism, For and Against (Rowman & Littlefield, 2006), a book co-authored by Dr. Tibor Machan, R.C. Hoiles Professor of Business and Free Enterprise, and Craig Duncan was selected by Choice magazine as one of the Outstanding Academic Titles for 2006. Published by the Association of College and Research Libraries Division of the American Library Association, Choice’s primary mission is to assist undergraduate academic librarians in building their collections. Professors Duncan and Machan also debated the topic on January 29, at Century College of Louisiana, in Shreveport, before a college-wide audience. Machan previously received the award for co-editing Right and Regulation (Ballinger, 1983). His book The Morality of Business, A Profession of Wealth Care will be published by Springer in February, 2007.


Turk_TYbarra_CDr. Tom Turk (left), and Dr. Candace Ybarra (right), Associate Professors of Management, recently had a paper accepted for publication. "The Effect of Takeover Defenses on Long Term and Short Term Analysts' Earnings Forecasts: The Case of Poison Pills” is co-authored with Jeremy Goh of Singapore Management University and will appear in a forthcoming issue of the Corporate Ownership and Control Journal. Dr. Turk also published a paper entitled “Growth Aspirations, Risk and Gender: A Look at Legal Form in the Services Industries” in the most recent volume of the Academy of Entrepreneurship Journal. This paper is co-authored with Lois Shelton of Cal State Northridge.

Broughton_JDr. Jack Broughton, associate dean, recently made an invited presentation at the AACSB Graduate Programs, Undergraduate Programs, and Emerging Curricula Conference in Scottsdale, AZ. The presentation was titled "Best Practices in Assurance of Learning," and provided a detailed view of the recently designed and implemented assessment plan in the Argyros School.

Dr. Broughton also recently published his paper, "Intraday and Day-of-the-Week Patterns in Put and Call Prices and Bid-Ask Spreads" in the Journal of International Finance and Economics. The paper was also presented at the International Academy of Business and Economics annual conference.


Kathuria_RDr. Ravi Kathuria, Associate Professor of Operations Management, presented a paper titled "Competitive Intelligence using the Awareness-Motivation-Capability Perspective" at the 37th annual national meeting of the Decision Sciences Institute, held November 17-21 in San Antonio, TX. In this paper Dr. Kathuria developed and applied a multi-criteria decision-making tool for assessing competitive behavior of direct and mutually acknowledged competitors in the wake of a change in their external environment. Dr. Kathuria also chaired a session titled "Strategies for Managing Information and IT" at this conference.

Dehning_BPfeiffer_GAn article by Dr. Glenn Pfeiffer (left), Professor of Accounting, and Dr. Bruce Dehning (right), Associate Professor of Accounting, was recently featured in the blog Research Central by Allan Alter, Executive Editor of CIO Insight. Research Central is one of the more widely read blogs for IT Professionals on the Internet. The article, “Analysts’ Forecasts and Investments in Information Technology” (coauthored with Vernon J. Richardson of the University of Arkansas) was discussed in the October edition of Research Central. This is the second time Professor Dehning has had an article appear in the Research Central blog. His article “The Financial Performance Effects of IT-Based Supply Chain Management Systems in Manufacturing Firms” (coauthored with Vernon J. Richardson of the University of Arkansas and Robert W. Zmud of the University of Oklahoma) appeared in the September blog.

Adler_HOn November 8, Hank Adler, Assistant Professor of Accounting, was honored by Hoag Hospital Memorial Presbyterian upon his retirement from the Board of Directors. Hank joined the Hoag Board of Directors in 1994 and was a member of the executive committee, member of the finance committee and chairman of the audit committee. Hoag Hospital's balance sheet grew from under $400M to almost $2B during his tenure on the board. Hank remains the chair of the Toshiba Classic, a professional golf tournament that has raised almost $10 million dollars for Hoag during his chairmanship.

Machan_TDr. Tibor Machan, R.C. Hoiles Chair in Business Ethics and Free Enterprise, recently had his book Defending Libertarianism published by Ashgate, as was the work he edited, Ayn Rand at 100, by Liberty Institute. Machan gave papers at American University on the ethics of raising children, and at Bowling Green State University on "Can Moral Judgments Be Objective?" He also presented the talk, "Libertarianism in One Lesson" at the University of Nevada, Reno and at Towson University.

Shukla_PDr. PK Shukla, Director of the Leatherby Center for Entrepreneurship and Business Ethics at Chapman University received the 2006 Best Faculty Advisor Award at the 2006 Annual Conference of the Collegiate Entrepreneurs’ Organization held in Chicago November, 2006.

The Collegiate Entrepreneurs’ Organization is the premier global entrepreneurship network serving more than 500 colleges and universities. The Collegiate Entrepreneurs' Organization informs, supports, and inspires college students to be entrepreneurial and seek opportunity through enterprise creation.

Dr. Shukla was nominated by student officers of Chapman University's SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise)/CEO Chapter for serving as their faculty advisor. He was selected as the best chapter advisor for 2006 from all CEO chapters both domestically and outside of the United States.

The selection committee noted his availability for students, the success of his students and student teams in competitions, his experience and passion for entrepreneurship, and for his success in leading Chapman University’s entrepreneurship program to national prominence.


Dehning_BDr. Bruce Dehning, Associate Professor of Accounting, was awarded the American Accounting Association Information Systems Section Notable Contributions to the Literature Award at the Annual Meeting of the AAA in August 2006. He also has a paper “The Financial Performance Effects of IT-Based Supply Chain Management Systems in Manufacturing Firms” (co-authored with Vern Richardson, and Bob Zmud) which was accepted for publication in the Journal of Operations Management. Dr. Dehning was recently elected President of the American Accounting Association Information Systems Section and will serve the term 2006-2007 as Vice-President/President Elect, and 2007-2008 as President.

Uslay_CDr. Can Uslay, Assistant Professor of Marketing, recently published two papers. “Predatory Pricing and Marketing Theory: Applications in Business-to-Business Context and Beyond” was published in the Journal of Business-to-Business Marketing and is co-authored with Naresh K. Malhotra and Fred C. Allvine. The paper integrates perspectives from marketing, strategy, law, and economics and examines the marketing discipline’s contributions to the existing predatory pricing paradigm with implications for contemporary antitrust enforcement.

Dr. Uslay also published "Helping Marketing Research Earn a Seat at the Table for Decision-Making: An Assessment and Prescription for the Future," in the special issue of the European Business Review on Status and Future Direction: Views from Global Thought  Leaders. The paper is co-authored with Naresh K. Malhotra and Mark Peterson. Dr. Uslay states the title for this paper says it all.


Erenburg_GDr. Grigori Erenburg, Assistant Professor of Finance, recently published the paper entitled “Trading Around Macroeconomic Announcements: Are All Traders Created Equal?” in the Journal of Financial Intermediation. The journal has a reported acceptance rate 6-11%. The paper was also presented at the Financial Management Association Annual Meeting and is co-authored with Alexander Kurov from West Virginia University and Dennis Lasser from Binghamton University (SUNY).

In the Fall of 2006 Dr. Erenburg also discussed a paper at the 2006 Financial Management Association (FMA) Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City, and helped in organizing the session for the 2006 Eastern Financial Association (EFA) Annual Meeting.


Chiu_HDr. Hsin-Hui Chiu,, Assistant Professor of Finance, recently presented a paper titled “The Role of Investor Sentiment in Seasoned Equity Offerings” at the annual Financial Management Association conference held in Salt Lake City, Utah. She shared her findings on the relations between past mutual fund flows and the equity offering process with the participants in the seminar.
