1. The Value of Studying Philosophy

·         “In a New Generation of College Students, Many Opt for the Life Examined.”
A recent article in the New York Times (April 6, 2008) explains why there is an increasing number of undergraduate philosophy majors across the nation.

·         Philosophy:  A Brief Guide for Undergraduates
This publication of the American Philosophical Association (APA) is a primer on what philosophy is and of what use it is. (Hosted by the APA)

·         The Philosophy Major
This pamphlet explains what it means to pursue philosophy as a major field of study, the skills one acquires when one majors in philosophy, and common ways of structuring philosophy curricula. (Hosted by the APA)

·         John Cleese Talks About Life and Philosophy
In these audio clips,  Monty Python veteran John Cleese explains how philosophy is useful to society.

2. “…But what will you do with that?” Professions for Philosophers

Below are some links that may be useful for convincing yourself, your parents, or others (with real arguments; no sophistry necessary!) that philosophy majors are employable. These websites also contain useful advice on how to sell your skills as philosopher to potential employers.

·         “I Think, Therefore I Earn: Philosophy Graduates Are Suddenly All the Rage with Employers.”
This recent article in The Guardian (Nov. 20, 2007) explains why philosophy degrees are in growing demand from employers, especially in the fields of “finance, property development, health, social work…and business.”

·         A Non-Academic Career? - Information, Resources, and Background on options for Philosophers
This publication of the APA is aptly titled.

·         Testimonials from Law and Business
Two former philosophy majors, a successful lawyer and a captain of industry, discuss how their philosophy studies have helped in their careers. (Hosted by the Rutgers University )

·         What Can You Do with a Philosophy Degree?
Hosted by Illinois State , this website contains a helpful list of some possible non-academic careers for philosophers, a list of skills philosophers possess, and an eloquent account of why these skills are valuable to employers. (This would be an especially good website to consult for philosophy majors preparing resumes or for non-academic job interviews.)

·         So, You Want to Teach Pre-College Philosophy?
This publication contains information about gaining employment teaching philosophy at the high school level (or below). (Hosted by the APA)

·         Philosophy as a Profession
Of course, one thing that you might do with a philosophy degree is go to graduate school and pursue an academic career as a professional philosopher. This page contains useful links to hard data about the prospects of doing so, and useful links to hard data about how well philosophers do on graduate exams (the short answer: very well).
