Audition Information



If you are applying to the Conservatory of Music, it is your responsibility to complete the Common Application, the Chapman University Supplemental Application, and this conservatory application by the specified deadline. In addition to filing the Common Application and the Chapman Supplemental Application for Admission, an audition and supplementary materials are also required. Please contact the Conservatory of Music for audition dates and any further questions at 714-997-6871. Applicants should apply as early as possible.

Instrumental Audition:

All students auditioning for acceptance into the Bachelor of Music in Instrumental Performance or the Bachelor of Music in Music Education–Instrumental Emphasis and/or an instrumental talent award should click on the following link that applies to your instrument for a detailed listing of audition requirements:

woodwinds, brass, percussion, saxophone, harp/guitar, or strings

Prospective students should contact the Conservatory of Music office at 714-997-6871 to set an instrumental audition time on any of the scheduled audition dates.

Guitar Audition:

All students auditioning for acceptance into the Bachelor of Music in Classical Guitar Performance or the Bachelor of Music in Music Education – Instrumental Emphasis with guitar as their primary performing medium, and/or a guitar talent award should prepare two selections of contrasting styles from standard repertoires, performed from memory. Selections chosen should demonstrate the applicant’s ability in phrasing, sustained playing, and technical facility. Prospective students should contact the Conservatory of Music office at 714-997-6871 to set a guitar audition time on any of the scheduled audition dates.

Piano Audition:

All students auditioning for acceptance into the Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance or the Bachelor of Music in Performance–Keyboard Collaborative Arts and/or a piano talent award, should prepare three of the four following piano works, performed from memory: 1. J. S. Bach Prelude and Fugue or Suite 2. Entire Classical Sonata or variations 3. Romantic Piece 4. Impressionist, 20th Century, or Contemporary piece The auditioning student may also be asked to sight read and play major and minor scales and arpeggios. Prospective students should contact the Conservatory of Music office at 714-997-6871 to set a piano audition time on any of the scheduled audition dates .

Vocal Audition:

All students auditioning for acceptance into the Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance or the Bachelor of Music in Music Education–Vocal Emphasis and/or a vocal talent award should prepare two vocal selections, performed from memory. The audition pieces can be art songs, arias, or musical theatre pieces. Jazz selections are not acceptable for audition. An accompanist will be provided, please bring sheet music. The auditioning student may also be asked to vocalize and sight read during the audition. Prospective students should contact the Conservatory of Music office at 714-997-6871 to set a vocal audition time on any of the scheduled audition dates.

Composition:

All students seeking admission into the Bachelor of Music in Composition should submit scores and audio recordings of performed works (CD, DVD, or audio tape) to the Office of Admission, Chapman University, One University Drive, Orange, CA 92866. Candidates must also audition on their primary instrument: voice, keyboard, guitar, or orchestral instrument and should contact the Conservatory of Music office at 714-997-6871 to set an audition time on any of the scheduled audition dates.

Conducting Audition:

All students auditioning for acceptance into the Bachelor of Music in Performance with an emphasis in Conducting, either Instrumental or Choral must audition on their primary instrument: voice, keyboard, guitar or orchestral instrument (see above requirements) and should contact the Conservatory of Music office at 714-997-6871 to set an audition time on any of the scheduled audition dates. Students may declare an intention to have an emphasis in conducting at entrance. Formal admission to the Bachelor of Music in Performance, Conducting Emphasis, will normally be granted prior to the junior year, after evaluation of student preparation and demonstrated potential have been evaluated to determine the appropriateness of the degree objective.

Audio or Video-taped Auditions:

In the event that an on-site visit to Chapman University is not possible, audio or video taped renditions of your performance ability, in accordance with the Conservatory of Music requirements noted above, may be submitted. Submissions may be in either CD, DVD or VHS formats and addressed to the attention of the Office of Admission, Chapman University, One University Drive, Orange, CA 92866. Please include your name and the last four digits of your Social Security number on all additional materials submitted to the Office of Admission.
