Conservatory of Music Audition Information

If you are applying to the Conservatory of Music as a music major, it is your responsibility to complete The Common Application and all Chapman University admission requirements (see application checklist) by the specified deadline(s). In addition, an audition and supplementary materials are also required (see below). All applicants are encouraged to apply and audition as early as possible. Applicants are encouraged to audition/interview in person whenever possible.

All auditions are held on the Chapman University campus in Orange, CA. Conservatory of Music auditions will take place in Bertea Hall (Bldg. 4 on the campus map).

Audition/Portfolio Upload
If a live audition is not possible, an applicant may upload a prerecorded video audition or portfolio (Bachelor of Arts in Music and composition applicants only) and the accompanying materials. Recorded auditions should follow the same guidelines for live auditions as specified by each division. Edited live performance videos are not acceptable.
Videos should include an introduction, a brief discussion of your performing experience, and answer to the question “Why do you want to attend Chapman?” Before beginning your performance, please also speak the title of your piece and the composer.
Students auditioning by video upload may also be interviewed by phone at the discretion of the division if further information is needed.

Instrumental All students auditioning for acceptance into the Bachelor of Music in Instrumental Performance or the Bachelor of Music in Music Education–Instrumental Emphasis should click on the following link that applies to your instrument for a detailed listing of audition requirements:
Prospective students should schedule an instrumental audition appointment during the posted audition dates. Additionally, please indicate whether or not you will require an accompanist at your audition.
Guitar All students auditioning for acceptance into the Bachelor of Music in Classical Guitar Performance or the Bachelor of Music in Music Education – Instrumental Emphasis with guitar as their primary instrument should prepare two selections of contrasting styles from standard repertoires, performed from memory. Selections chosen should demonstrate the applicant’s ability in phrasing, sustained playing, and technical facility. Prospective students should schedule a guitar audition appointment during the posted audition dates.
Piano All students auditioning for acceptance into the Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance or the Bachelor of Music in Performance–Keyboard Collaborative Arts should prepare three of the four following piano works, performed from memory:
- J. S. Bach Prelude and Fugue or Suite
- One movement of a Classical Sonata
- Romantic Piece
- Impressionist, 20th Century, or Contemporary piece
The auditioning student may also be asked to sight read, and play major and minor scales and arpeggios. Prospective students should schedule a piano audition appointment during the posted audition dates.
Vocal All students auditioning for acceptance into the Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance or the Bachelor of Music in Music Education–Vocal Emphasis should prepare two vocal selections, performed from memory. The audition pieces can be arias or art songs in any language. Musical theatre, jazz or pop selections are not acceptable for audition. An accompanist will be provided, please bring sheet music. The auditioning student may also be asked to vocalize and sight read during the audition. Prospective students should schedule a vocal audition appointment during the posted audition dates.
Conducting All students auditioning for acceptance into the Bachelor of Music in Performance with an emphasis in Conducting, either Instrumental or Choral, must audition on their primary instrument: voice, keyboard, guitar or orchestral instrument (see above requirements). Prospective students should schedule an audition appointment on their primary instrument during the posted audition dates.
Composition All students seeking admission into the Bachelor of Music in Composition should submit scores and audio recordings of performed works electronically. Prospective students must also audition on their primary instrument: voice, keyboard, guitar, or orchestral instrument (see above requirements). Prospective students should schedule an audition appointment on their primary instrument during the posted audition dates.
Bachelor of Arts in Music All students seeking admission into the Bachelor of Arts in Music program should submit one sample of written work. Please visit CoPA Audition/Portfolio Upload for additional instructions. Prospective students must also audition on their primary instrument: voice, keyboard, guitar, or orchestral instrument (see above requirements). Prospective students should schedule an audition appointment on their primary instrument during the posted audition dates. Students will be admitted to the Bachelor of Arts in Music program on the basis of academic achievement, writing sample, academic letters of recommendation, and audition on their primary instrument.
