+-Los Cien de Ruebén – The One Hundred Book Club

Back by popular demand, the exclusive “Los Cien de Ruebén – The One Hundred Book Club” is offering yearly memberships to friends of Rueben and the LMdeCU for the first one hundred people to join the book club.  Benefits will include a newly-released or time-honored classic, personally autographed by the author and a private event with the author (as schedules permit) hosted by LMdeCU.

We are also hosting a kickoff event for Los Cien de Ruebén on Saturday, April 6, 11am, at the LMdeCU. The featured author will be our very own Ruebén Martinez with his compilation of Latin American stories, "Once Upon a Time" or "Había una vez." Please join us for a reading of two select stories from “Once Upon a Time” accompanied by a puppet show. As a memorable keepsake, sets of finger puppets will be available for sale.

+-Community Educational Programs

Initially, the following programs will serve the local community:

  1. Literacy Programs - This program aims to foster love of reading for pre-school age children by establishing a reading time where children and their parents can enjoy stories in English and Spanish. Chapman faculty and students will be involved in reading groups as well as one-on-one and mommy and me type readings. In the future, plans also include offering reading and literacy tutoring, as well as math and financial literacy for children, teens and adults.
  2. Parent Groups - Padres Unidos, a community based parent education group affiliated with Chapman, will be holding parent development courses at Librería Martinez. These courses are aimed at strengthening the family, supporting school children and building stronger, safer communities.
  3. Teens - Chapman will also offer workshops and education counseling on various topics to help teens navigate the high school system as well as provide orientation and support for pursuing college and other higher educational opportunities. This outreach will be directed at both male and female teens who may need help finding ways to be successful in school.
  4. Literature, Reading and Arts Clubs – Librería Martinez will also offer monthly book discussions, book signings, author and artist presentations. Our mission is to encourage love of reading and the arts and ensure children and adults have access to free, low cost quality reading and other educational materials in their native language as they are developing their English skills.
  5. CES classes – students from the undergraduate major of Integrated Educational Studies through the Ph.D. in Education program will take some of their classes at Librería Martinez in a lecture and fieldwork setting. For fall 2012, these classes include:
    • IES 492, Senior Seminar Internships:  A seminar-based practicum where students meet regularly as a group with their faculty to share, discuss and evaluate experiences in schools and other community-based educational settings.
    • EDUC 570, Foundational Issues of Voice, Diversity, Equity and Social Justice:  A foundation course for multicultural education and experiences that sensitize and prepare future teachers for California's diverse public schools.  This class serves as a laboratory to promote respect for diversity by uncovering assumptions and belief systems for people who seem to be different.
    • EDUC 761, Qualitative Approaches to Inquiry:  An intensive course in the use of field-based and general qualitative research methods in the social study of education.
