Having earned two doctoral degrees in two different yet similar fields, Washington State University (1981) and The University of Texas at Austin (1997) provides for a unique breadth and depth to my teaching and scholarship.  Through my continuing line of inquiry, I demonstrate that marginalized groups experience a much different world than the dominant group, a world built on white privilege.  The goal of my pedagogical practice is to stimulate thoughtful practice and politically sensitive curriculum inquiry.  My philosophical approach is to provide support for maintaining freedom of thought in public schools.  I am there to facilitate, not to command.  Through teaching, I seek to define and describe the linkages between the economic, social, and political organizations in urban systems of education.

My research agenda examines the complexity of the dialogic gap between the two life worlds of education – those with voice and those without voice.  My line of inquiry consciously connects me to a clear sense of the realities of structurally generalized inequalities that play a potent role in the life worlds of education.  Thus, my scholarship is historically situated within and between the social structures of gender, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, and class; in particular how the multiple realities of marginalized peoples are socially and culturally constructed.

I am a published author of four books, a series editor with five books, five book chapters, twenty-seven journal articles, and numerous international/national peer reviewed presentations.  Funded grants, both internal and external funding, total $624,150.  My teaching experience includes undergraduate courses, master's level graduate courses, and doctoral level graduate courses.  I directed six dissertations to full completion and served as committee member on six completed dissertations.
