Dr. Joel A. Colbert, Professor and Director of the Ph. D. program in Education at Chapman University, is a lifelong educator.  He earned his Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction, with a specialization in science education, from the University of Kansas.  He began his teaching career as a classroom teacher in south central Los Angeles.  Prior to coming to Chapman University, he was a Professor of Clinical Education and Director of the Undergraduate and Teacher Education Program at the University of Southern California.  Prior to that he was on the faculty and an administrator at California State University, Dominguez Hills.

His research interests include using case studies in teacher education, science education, and technology pedagogical content knowledge.  He is very active in professional organizations, serving as Vice President of the California Council on Teacher Education (CCTE) and Chair of the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education (AACTE) Committee on Innovation and Technology.

He teaches and advises students in the Ph.D. program.
