James Gutierrez is a Eugene Cota-Robles Fellow at the University of California, San Diego. In the music department his focus is Integrative Studies, with emphases in Systems Inquiry and Creative Practice. His research in the areas of music theory, pedagogy and embodied cognition has been presented at numerous conferences, including the American Musicological Society, the Society for Music Perception and Cognition, the Society for Education, Music and Psychology Research, the College Music Society, the International Conference on New Music Concepts, and others. James has also lectured at UCSD, Azusa Pacific University, and Life Pacific College, and has been an active composer/arranger/keyboardist for over a decade. Outside of the academy James serves on the board of directors for the Center for World Music, a non-profit organization that creates multicultural programs in San Diego schools and communities.
