Kimberly A. White-Smith is Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Education and Associate Professor of Teacher Education at Chapman University. She received her Doctor of Education degree in Learning and Instruction from the University of Southern California. Dr. White-Smith’s Master of Arts in Education degree in Curriculum and Instruction is from Teachers College, Columbia University; her Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Psychology and minor in African American Studies was completed at the University of California, Berkeley.
A former elementary school teacher, Dr. White-Smith has expertise in integrated curriculum design and instruction. In addition, she has extensive experience in creating, implementing, and evaluating exemplary models of teacher professional development. Dr. White-Smith honed these skills through her work with the Los Angeles Educational Partnership (currently known as the Urban Educational Partnership); National Center for Restructuring Education, Schools, and Teaching (NCREST) at Teachers College, Columbia University; University of Southern California; California State University, Dominguez Hills; and consulting with private education foundations.
Dr. White-Smith participates in a number of scholarly activities that serve to identify educational environments, policies, and teaching strategies that promote academic achievement for traditionally underserved students. She is a Faculty Researcher for Project SMART and the Read-Write Cycle Project, federally funded programs that aims to raise student reading and writing achievement in the content areas using research-based strategies. Additionally, Dr. White-Smith is a Visiting Scholar at the University of California, Los Angeles where she is working with Dr. Walter R. Allen on the CHOICES Project: Access, Equity, and Diversity in Higher Education. CHOICES is a collaborative of scholars, policy makers, and community activists that examines the educational opportunities of African Americans and Latinos in California.
As a member of the American Educational Research Association, Dr. White-Smith is the current Chair of Professional Development for Division K, Teaching and Teacher Education and has served as Annual Conference Program Co-chair for Division K (2005-2006) and Program Reviewer (2004-present). As well, she reviews for the Journal of Teacher Education, Issues in Teacher Education, and Teachers College Record. Dr. White-Smith is also a member of California Council on Teacher Education, Association of Teacher Educators, and Phi Delta Kappa International.
