Roxanne Greitz Miller joined the faculty at Chapman University in June 2005 at the rank of tenure-track Assistant Professor with emphases in Secondary and Science Education, and also serves as the founding Education Director of the Science Teaching and Research (STAR) Institute at Chapman.  She received her Doctor of Education degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a major in Science Education and a cognate in Gifted Education from Florida International University, the state’s largest NCATE-accredited and Research I-ranked public College of Education.  Dr. Miller’s Master of Science in Education degree in Science Education is also from Florida International; her Bachelor of Science degree (with Honors) and NCATE-approved teacher preparation program were completed at the University of Miami, with a major in Biology and minors in Secondary Education and Chemistry.

While doing her graduate work, Dr. Miller spent ten years as a full-time secondary science teacher at both the middle school and senior high levels with concurrent administrative appointments as department chairperson and exceptional education coordinator.  She continues to hold current teaching credentials in biology, chemistry, middle grades, and gifted education in the states of Florida and California.  After leaving the public school classroom, Dr. Miller was appointed a National Science Foundation-funded Postdoctoral Scholar at the University of California (UC) Riverside’s Graduate School of Education, which was ranked fifth in the United States for research productivity in education during her five-year appointment.  While at UC Riverside, she conducted not only her own federally-funded research, but also supervised the work of over twenty doctoral students in the Curriculum and Instruction program.

Since coming to Chapman, the university-sponsored, state, and federal research grant projects that Dr. Miller designed, authored, and in which she has been engaged as Principal Investigator or Co-Principal Investigator represent $3 million in funding.  In addition, during the past three years she has published or had accepted twelve refereed articles (both theoretical, empirical, and practitioner-based), four book chapters (research-based and practical applications), and two comprehensive historical abstracts.  A frequent presenter at state, national, and international conferences, Dr. Miller has made over 30 refereed conference presentations since 2000.  She also serves as Contributing Editor to the top practitioner journal for middle school science education (NSTA’s Science Scope), and is on the boards of review for additional research-based journals and multiple professional associations.

Despite her research background and scholarly productivity, Dr. Miller considers herself first and foremost to be at teacher.  As she emphasizes to her students, "teaching is not what you do; it is who you are."  Dr. Miller’s current teaching areas of responsibility include courses in secondary instructional methods and science education, and she also advises students in the secondary teaching credential and graduate degree programs.
