Expectations of Students

Athletic training students must adhere to several requirements and standards throughout the duration of their program in order to progress and to successfully graduate. Some of these requirements are detailed below. There are several other additional Get Acrobat Readerrequirements and standards (e.g., clinical site dress code, professional conduct/behavior, and maintaining patient confidentiality), which are detailed in the Athletic Training Student Handbook.

Technical Standards

The ATEP Technical Standards establish the essential demands and requirements of all enrolled athletic training students. All ATEP students must meet these abilities and expectations, which establish the minimum essential qualities to achieve the knowledge, skills, and competencies of an entry-level Athletic Trainer. In the event than an athletic training student is unable to fulfill these technical standards with or without reasonable accommodation, he/she will not successfully advance through the ATEP and/or the Athletic Training major. Refer to the ATEP Student Handbook for the complete delineation of Technical Standards.

Psychomotor Competencies (formerly known as “Proficiencies”)

Students must complete all of the psychomotor competencies delineated in this course outline by the dates specified (see course calendar). These psychomotor competencies are conducted on campus and are evaluated by either the course instructor or the ATEP graduate assistant Approved Clinical Instructor, outside of lab class session times (i.e., by appointment, during office hours). Failure to complete all psychomotor competencies by the end of the semester will result in a course grade of Incomplete (“I”), with the expectation that the student completes the deficient competencies within a deadline prescribed by the course instructor.

Mandatory Clinical Inservices

Students are expected to attend all ATEP monthly clinical inservices/meetings, which feature guest speakers presenting regarding a variety of allied health and other topics as scheduled by faculty. If a student is unable to attend an inservice, he/she must arrange to view a video of the session (Inservices will be recorded and available in the ATEP student library.). Failure to either attend an inservice or to view its corresponding video will result in a course grade of Incomplete (“I”), with the expectation that the student completes this requirement within a deadline prescribed by the course instructor.

Clinical Proficiencies (formerly known as “Rotation Objectives”)

Students must complete all of the clinical proficiencies delineated in this course outline by the dates specified (see course calendar). These clinical proficiencies are conducted at each student’s assigned clinical site and are evaluated by the student’s Approved Clinical Instructor (ACI) or Clinical Instructor (CI). Failure to complete the prescribed number of clinical proficiencies by their respective due dates will result in an assignment score deduction (see “Methods of Evaluation”). Additionally, students must complete the site orientation and Confidentiality of Personal Health Information (PHI) forms by the end of the first week of the semester; failure to do so will result in the student’s removal from the site until these forms are completed. Failure to complete all clinical proficiencies by the end of the semester will result in a course grade of Incomplete (“I”), with the expectation that the student completes the deficient proficiencies within a deadline prescribed by the course instructor.

Clinical Rotation Hours

All ATEP students must accumulate the minimum number of clinical education hours as outlined below (also available in Chapman University’s Athletic Training Student Handbook). If a student anticipates any difficulty with achieving the required minimum number of hours (e.g., physician-documented illness, injury, medical leave of absence, scheduling conflict with a required course, etc.), he/she must notify the Clinical Education Coordinator as soon as possible. Monthly clinical hours logs must be signed by the student’s ACI and submitted the first lab class session of each month. Failure to complete the required minimum number of clinical rotation hours by the end of the semester will result in a course grade of Incomplete (“I”), with the expectation that the student completes the deficient hours within a deadline prescribed by the course instructor.

 * The above hours are minimum requirements for a season/semester at the clinical site. In addition, a student cannot be scheduled more than 19 hours/week or acquire more than 285 hours at their clinical site during the 15-week semester (19 hours/week * 15 weeks/semester = 285 hours).

** Each student is required to stay at their clinical site with their assigned clinical instructor until the end of the semester. A student may leave their clinical site before the end of the semester if 1) the student has satisfactorily finished all clinical proficiencies/rotation objectives and required clinical hours, and 2) the ACI and the student mutually agree that there is no further need for the student at the clinical site.
