RSVP for belay classes today by clicking here. Online belay class registration is required for top-rope climbers. Personal instruction is required prior to climbing. 

The Doti-Struppa Rock Wall ofers four instruction options

+ - Belay Lesson

Our belay lesson includes an orientation of the Doti-Struppa Rock Wall followed by instruction on belay techniques, commands, inspections, gear, and knot tying. These sessions are designed for beginner to intermediate climbers with novice experience.

Training sessions are limited to four (4) participants to ensure personal attention. Guests must pass a test at the end of the belay lesson in order to receive a belay card.

+ - Open Climb

Open climbing includes an orientation of the Doti-Struppa Rock Wall, followed by top-rope climbing with our Rock Wall Assistants belaying the climber. Beginners to advanced climbers may utilize our open-climbing times. Orientation is required for all climbers, regardless of experience. Open climbing is during open hours unless noted otherwise. Lessons and checks are scheduled at 7pm and 8pm and take priority to open climbing.

+ - Belay Check

Our belay check includes an orientation of the Doti-Struppa Rock Wall followed by a test of belay command skills. These sessions are designed for experienced climbers. Belay checks are limited to four (4) participants to ensure personal attention. Guests must pass a test at the end of the belay check in order to receive a belay card. 

Guests are expected to demonstrate the following competencies during the belay check:

  • Ability to tie a figure eight follow through knot with a fisherman’s knot on top
  • Proper belay technique
  • Understanding of Doti-Struppa Rock Wall policies
  • Proper belay commands
  • Ability to complete basic gear inspection
  • Ability to complete pre-climb inspection of self and climbing partner
  • Other skills related to indoor rock climbing

+ - Climbing Clinic

Our Climbing Clinics offer the basics of rock climbing and aim to create a foundation of the sport for climbers of all skill levels. The clinics occur on every 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month from 1pm to 3pm. During this time, open climbing will not be permitted.

Spots are limited to 10 people, please RSVP at engage.chapman.edu. Guests will
have the opportunity to learn more about the following topics:

  • Climbing holds
  • Climbing moves
  • Climbing techniques
  • Gear use/set-up
  • Safety        

Attending any Doti-Struppa Rock Wall event entails a fully-stamped (8 stamps) Fitness Challenge stamp card.


Accessing the Rock Wall

  • Access is limited to current students and permanent administrators, staff or faculty members.
  • All Climbers must annually sign the Fitness & Recreation Waiver before climbing: http://web.chapman.edu/fitnesscenter. Persons under 18 years of age must have a parent or guardian sign the waiver.
  • A valid Chapman University ID is required for check-in.
  • All unroped climbers must annually pass a Core Clinic prior to climbing in the facility.
  • All top-rope climbers must annually pass a Belay Test.
  • All top-rope climbers or belayers must display valid belay certification card while climbing.
