»Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

The Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology conforms to the guidelines provided by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, but students also have a wide variety of options regarding specialization, and they receive faculty tutelage as they complete a research project of their choosing with the possibility of funding from the National Science Foundation, Beta Beta Beta National Biological Honor Society, Sigma Xi, American Chemical Society, or other reputable foundations.  Additionally, the degree offers a wide variety of summer internship opportunities, as one student recently studied T cell receptor populations in a mouse model of multiple sclerosis at the Mayo Clinic.

Faculty scientists and students are currently researching fascinating topics such as:

  • how pomegranate juice extract inhibits pancreatic cancer cell growth
  • how signal transduction pathways affect smooth muscle disease
  • the environmental and pharmaceutical implications surrounding the synthesis  of organic compounds
  • the relationship between the electron transfer in proteins  and solar energy/artificial photosynthesis offer a degree that grants students an understanding of the molecular mechanisms and processes that constitute living systems.

The major advances in healthcare now come from an understanding of molecular biochemistry and biochemical technology, and as such, the degree prepares students for medical, dental, pharmacy, and other allied health care fields, for graduate school in various bioscience fields, and for employment as a biochemist or biomedical scientist in government and industry, which involves recombinant DNA technologies, stem cell research, gene therapy, drug design, genomics and proteomics, genetic engineering and molecular biology.
