October 14 Picnic & Pops Concert Bring your picnic dinner and blankets or chairs for a fun concert by the Chapman University Wind Symphony under the direction of Paul Sherman. This year’s Picnic and Pops Concert will include movie clips and music by Charlie Chaplin, Queen (“Bohemian Rhapsody” in Wayne's World), and Astor Piazzola (“Libertango” in The Tango Lesson), and also feature music from Ghostbusters (Ray Parker Jr.), El Cid (Miklos Rosza), Pirates of the Caribbean and Gladiator (Hans Zimmer). October 28 University Singers in Concert Stephen Coker, conductor The Conservatory’s elite 30-voice chamber choir, the University Singers, begins the university’s fall choral season by performing a wide variety of exciting choral works. Included in the evening’s repertoire will be contemporary works by Steven Stucky and Polish composer Andrzej Koszewski, as well as folk songs, world music, and American spirituals. October 30 Chapman University Choir and Women's Choir in Concert Stephen Coker and Angel Vázquez-Ramos, conductors In this joint concert, Chapman’s major treble ensemble, the 55-voice Women’s Choir, makes its fall debut singing works of Franz Schubert, Francis Poulenc, Ola Gjeilo, and the compositional team of Paul Caldwell and Sean Ivory. The University Choir of some 60 mixed voices performs a program consisting of Renaissance and Romantic era repertoire as well as the choral suite There Is Sweet Music by Canadian composer Stephen Chatman. November 17 Chapman Percussion Ensemble Nicholas Terry, Director The Chapman Percussion Ensemble presents an evening of sonically brilliant music produced by the sublime combination of struck terracotta flower pots, coffee cans, washtubs, car brake drums, Chinese gongs, processed and amplified electronics, and even a violin! Featured compositions include Lou Harrison’s Concerto for Violin and Percussion Orchestra (featuring faculty guest artist William Fitzpatrick), two new works by faculty composer Shaun Naidoo, Chinese percussive theatre, and Frank Zappa’s twisted rhythmic odyssey The Black Page. November 20 Chapman Guitar Ensemble Jeffrey Cogan, Director Under the direction of Professor Jeffrey Cogan, the Guitar Program at Chapman University has flourished since its inception in 1982. Guitarists performing as soloists and in ensembles have opportunities to perform in concerts, classes at Chapman and on tour. In March 2009, the Chapman Guitar Quartet won 1st Place Awards (Best Quartet & Best Duo) at the University of Texas at Brownsville with Texas Southmost College Guitar Ensemble Festival and Competition. November 21 Big Band & Jazz Combos Albert Alva, Director The Chapman Big Band & Jazz Combos will perform music by Oliver Nelson, Benny Carter, and Duke Ellington, along with several student arrangements. December 6 Conservatory Faculty in Recital - Matsuura, Terry, DeHart, & Palchak Chapman University Conservatory of Music faculty members Mary Palchak, flute, Nick Terry and Justin DeHart, percussion, and Gary Matsuura, conductor/saxophone, along with Jan Jordan, piano, and Eric Guinivan, Matthew Cook and Kris Berry, percussion, present three world premieres from composers Fred Katz, Bob Clendene and Stuart Sanders. Jade Mountain by Fred Katz utilizes flute, marimba, vibraphone, bells, xylophone, piano and various percussion instruments. The Next Three Miles by Bob Clendenen is a percussion duo and They Looked Like Strangers by Stuart Sanders is composed for solo vibraphone. Join us to welcome this new music to the world. December 8 New Music Ensemble Sean Heim, Director Under the direction of Sean Heim, the New Music Ensemble presents works by current composition majors as well as those by many of the major composers of the last fifty years. Instrumental and vocal faculty members, along with distinguished guest artists, often participate in the ensemble, thus offering students a chance to perform with their teachers and mentors as well as their peers. April 22 Chapman Saxophone Ensemble Gary Matsuura, Director The Chapman University Saxophone Ensemble performs an eclectic mix of repertoire from the Baroque era to the present. Baritone, tenor, alto and soprano saxophones are combined in duos, trios, quartets and larger ensembles to produce a rich, glorious sound featuring works by J.S. April 27-29 Opera Chapman presents Mozart's Fantasy Opera The Magic Flute (Die Zauberflöte) Peter Atherton, Artistic Director Carol Neblett, Associate Director Stephen Coker, Conductor Opera Chapman proudly presents Mozart’s beloved The Magic Flute (Die Zauberflöte), sung in German with super-title translations and dialogues in English. Mozart’s final opera has enchanted audiences for more than 220 years. Charming and endlessly imaginative Mozart and his librettist, Emanuel Schikaneder, take us on a journey through strange lands full of Masonic symbolism, romantic love, vengeance, spiritual transcendence and a charming bird catcher.
