Guitar and Guitar EnsembleUnder the direction of Jeffrey Cogan, M.A., the Chapman University guitar program and the Chapman Guitar Quartet have flourished since 1982. Our newest instructor is Dr. David Cahueque. Guitarists performing as soloists and in ensembles have opportunities to perform in concerts and classes at Chapman and on tour. Most recently, the Chapman Guitar Quartet won two 1st Place awards (Best Quartet and Best Duo) at the March 2009 University of Texas at Brownsville with Texas Southmost College (UTB/TSC) Guitar Ensemble Festival and Competition. Visiting artists and teachers have included Manuel Barrueco, Carlos Barbosa-Lima, The Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, Lily Afshar, The Gothenberg Combo, Thomas Viloteau, Jerome Ducharme, Goran Krivokapic, Jeremy Jouve, Dimitri Illarionov, Martha Masters, Lorenzo Micheli, Denis Azabagic, Judical Perroy, Fabio Zanon, Antigoni Goni, Margarita Escarpa, Kevin Gallager, Jason Vieaux, Alexei Zimakov, Joseph Hagedorn, Marc Teicholz, Olivier Chassain, and Ricardo Cobo. During the 2008-2009 academic year, the Conservatory welcomed guitarists Enric Madriguera, Marcin Dylla, Karoline Kumst, and David Burgess. They were each featured in concerts and presented master classes for Chapman students. Students can study in a classroom setting or in individual lessons. In addition, guitar for Music Education majors is offered in group and individual lessons. Students have numerous opportunities to perform for visiting master teachers and at recitals. The study of guitar at Chapman includes solo and ensemble literature. Chapman students not majoring in music may also study the guitar.
