Music Education
The Music Education Program, under the direction of Dr. Robert Frelly, consistently trains students to be well prepared, knowledgeable, and confident in their abilities. Our graduates are among the finest music teachers in the country, and many are leaders in their field. The placement rate for graduates seeking a teaching position in the California public and private school settings continues to be 100%. Based on their experience and interests, music education majors may select from two degree options: a concentration in vocal music, or a concentration in instrumental music. Students have opportunities to combine their studies with “hands-on” experience in elementary, middle, and high school music programs. They work intensively in the field while studying and applying the best educational methods and techniques, thus gaining a wide repertoire of skills, a wealth of resources, and confidence in their ability as a teacher. During their junior year, students may decide the level and type of setting that they prefer to teach after graduation. Course work, internships, and additional field experiences are then arranged accordingly. Upon completion of their degree (a four-year program), music education majors receive a Bachelor of Music (pre-certification), and may choose to enter into the Credential Program through the University’s School of Education. During this fifth-year of study, students complete a series of courses and a directed teaching (student teaching) experience, leading to the California Single Subject Teaching Credential in Music. The Music Education program at Chapman is accredited by the California Commission on Teaching Credentialing. |
