Commencement Calendar and Deadlines We encourage students and guests to understand deadlines and requirements thoroughly so that approval to take part in Commencement is not delayed. Check for the latest updates regarding necessities, scheduling and end-of-year events at the Commencement website. As a reminder, please make hotel reservations for your stay as early as possible. Housing Selection and Deadlines for 2007-2008 There are several changes being made to this year’s housing selection procedure as Braden Hall is being razed over the summer to make way for a new Residence Hall/Dining Facility that will open in fall 2009. Be aware of procedures and dates for housing selection for 2007-2008. As a reminder, make sure that your student turns in his or her housing application and upgrades to the $600 housing deposit by March 23rd. Late applications and/or deposits will not be accepted. Monthly Polling Question: Campus Housing Year End Check-Out Each month the Chapman Parent Connection will conduct a polling question(s) to help parents with common issues, share tips and provide feedback of how we can better assist you. This month our polling question is focused on moving your student out of on-campus housing at the end of the semester. Important Cal Grant News for California Residents Is your student receiving a Cal Grant award to assist in financing their education at Chapman University? Recent reductions in funding may be affecting a student’s ability to attend independent colleges and universities in California, such as Chapman. We are calling for Chapman parents to speak out and become active advocates for the Cal Grant program. Learn More

Annual State of the University Address President Jim Doti delivered the annual “State of the University Address” on February 20th in Chapman’s Memorial Hall before a packed house of Chapman University faculty, staff, administrators, and students. Chapman Student Radio Celebrates 40 Years On-Air To commemorate 40 years of on-air broadcasting, Chapman’s student radio station celebrated with the dedication of their new studio on Thursday, March 8. A Message from the Chief of Public Safety Public Safety has made it a full-time commitment to ensure that the Chapman community feels secure when on campus. Maya Angelou Receives Honorary Doctorate Dr. Maya Angelou, was honored by Chapman University on February 22 with an honorary doctorate in humane letters. She appeared at Chapman to give a lecture to students and faculty as a part of the university’s annual Phenomenal Women’s Week, presented by Associated Students, the Chapman student government. Dodge College “Premier” Event The Chapman University Dodge College of Film and Media Arts hosted a “coming out” party in celebration of the new Marion Knott Studios. The event involved appearances by Arnold Schwarzenegger, Angela Basset, and Virginia Madsen. Glamorous themed parties were hosted on the buildings soundstages, each with a unique theme. Leatherby Libraries’ First Annual Book Sale A Success Thanks to the help from faculty, staff, students, and several volunteers from Town & Gown, over 2,100 books were sold, bringing in more than $2,250. Student Spotlight: Emily Doti ’07 and Christine Campbell M.S. ‘07 Food Science students, Senior Emily Doti ‘07 and Graduate Student Christine Campbell M.S. ‘07, developed a food product called “Pizza Puzzle” in Dr. Anuradha Prakash’s product development class during the fall semester of 2006. They went on to enter their product in the Southern California Section of the Institute of Food Technologists’ product development competition which was held on Feb. 13 at Cal Poly Pomona. Emily and Christine won first place and were presented with a cash award of $2,500 and a plaque. They were also selected to compete in the National Institute of Food Technologists Product Development Competition, which will be held in Chicago in July.
Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Noel Murray Dr. Noel Murray, associate professor of marketing in the George L. Argyros School of Business and Economics, became the director of the Walter Schmid Center for International Business as of March 1, 2007. As part of this position, Dr. Murray will work with students, faculty and the external community to facilitate and promote activities in support of international business, such as international study tours, field study projects, student consulting and faculty research focusing on international business. Dr. Murray’s areas of expertise include international marketing, cross-cultural issues in marketing communications and advertising strategy. His research has been widely published in leading academic journals and profiled in The Los Angeles Times and in Media Life Magazine.
Alumni Spotlight: Ian Reitz ’05 Ian Reitz ’05 graduated Summa Cum Laude from Chapman University with a double major in Broadcast Journalism and Political Science/International Relations. Reitz can now be seen as an anchor/reporter for the NewsChannel 9 Weekend Edition in El Paso, TX. Prior to moving to El Paso, Ian was a Reporter at KMIR 6-NBC in Palm Springs and NewsChannel 3 in Orange County. He began his broadcasting career on the assignment desk at KTTV-FOX in Los Angeles. Art Exhibition: ARTE LATINOAMERICANO (2/12-5/15) In conjunction with their visiting writers series, the Fowles Center is presenting an exhibition of artworks by a select group of internationally recognized Latin-American artists through May 15 in the Doy and Dee Henley Reading Room on the 2nd floor of the Leatherby Libraries. Theatre: A Night of Noh Theatre (3/15-18 & 21-24) Join Chapman’s Theater Department to experience a night of stylized movement performed to rhythmic heightened poetical text from two classical plays, Kantan and Hagoramo, written by Zeami Motokiyo, the father of Noh Theatre. This play is directed by Professor Tamiko Washington and performances will talk place in the Studio Theatre, Moulton Center 149, at 8 p.m. with a 2 p.m. matinee on 3/18. Founders Day Celebration (3/17) The 24th Annual Founders Day Celebration, themed “IMAGINE!”, will take place on the Chapman campus from 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. In addition to the featured speaker, Alvin Jackson, Chapman’s Concert Choir, directed by Dr. William Hall, will perform, and there will be a poetry reading by Sheila Spencer. “Gospel of Judas” Lecture (3/21) Dr. Marvin Meyer, a professor of religious studies and a member of the team that brought the gospel of Judas to light last year will present a lecture with Dr. Elaine Pagels of Princeton University on “The Gospel of Judas: A Conversation with the Experts.” This lecture will take place in Memorial Hall at 7p.m. and there is no cost to attend. Study Abroad Fair and Recruitment Season (3/28) The Study Abroad Office will kick-off recruitment season for spring 2008 with its bi-annual Study Abroad Fair on March 28 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. in the walkway between Argyros Forum and the Leatherby Library. The following day the Study Abroad Office will begin handing out application materials. Students are asked to review the Application Session Schedule for dates and times. It is recommended that students come in for an initial advising session with one of the Study Abroad Peer Advisors after having viewed the current Study Abroad Programs and Locations. Learn More
Dance: Concert Intime (3/29-31) Enjoy an intimate evening of dance presented by Chapman student choreographers. The dancers produce challenging and entertaining works in various styles under the direction of Professor Jennifer Backhaus. This event will take place at the Judith Partridge Center, Room 107 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $5 at the door. For further information, call (714) 628-1411.
Fowles Literary Forum: Alicia Borinsky (3/26) and Ana Maria Shua (4/9) Chapman University’s John Fowles Center for Creative Writing presents a series of readings by six prominent Latin-American authors. All readings will be held in the Doy and Dee Henley Reading Room on the 2nd floor of the Leatherby Libraries. Spring 2007 Career Fair (4/24) A career fair is better experienced than explained! Encourage your son or daughter to attend this year’s Spring Career Fair with over 30 companies from a variety of industries who will be recruiting for full-time, part-time, internships and summer positions. Athletics 4th Annual Golf Tournament (5/9) Sponsored by Chapman’s Golf Team, this annual golf tournament will take place at the breathtaking Tustin Ranch Golf Club. Chapman Radio to Broadcast Six Home Baseball Games Chapman University Athletics is partnering with the student-run Chapman Radio to broadcast six home baseball games. The “game of the week” format will continue with the next broadcast game against Montclair State on March 17. Click here for a complete list of the team’s schedule. Sponsor a Chapman Athlete During Jog-A-Thon (5/4) Family, friends and loved ones may sponsor a Chapman student athlete to jog 10 laps around Holly and David Wilson Field on Friday, May 4 at a choice of levels ranging from $100 per lap to $0.50 per lap. Join the Chapman Alumni Association's Team in Relay for Life (6/2-3) Relay for Life is an overnight event designed to celebrate cancer survivors and to raise money to help the American Cancer Society. During the event, the Chapman Alumni Team will gather at Irvine Valley College to take turns walking or running laps. Each team tries to keep at least one team member on the track at all times during this 24-hour relay.
