Stephen Berens 
Assistant Professor of Art, Photography

Stephen Berens is an artist and is in charge of the photography area in the Chapman University Department of Art. His work has been included in over one hundred group and one-person exhibitions in venues that include the Museum of Modern Art, New York and the Chicago Art Institute.

Professor Berens has worked in a variety of media including photography, video, painting, drawing and artist books.  His videos have been screened in numerous venues including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles and two LA Freewaves biennial festivals of experimental media arts.  His work is in a number of permanent public collections, including the International Museum of Photography at the George Eastman House, Rochester, New York, the BibliothèqueNationale, Paris and the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

Professor Berens is one of the co-founders of X-TRA, a Los Angeles-based contemporary art journal.  Since 1998, X-TRA has featured the work of over 500 artists and writers from around the world. X-TRA has been awarded numerous grants in recognition of the quality of the publication including awards from the Andy Warhol Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts, among other granting agencies.   In addition, Professor Berens has worked as a curator and has edited over one dozen exhibition catalogs. Professor Berens teaches foundation and advanced photography.
