Chapman University In Love With Night

September 8-October 9
In Love With Night
Curated by Ciara Ennis and Max King Cap
In Love With Night considers our ambivalence about darkness, both literal and figurative. As children we dared each other, as adults we look over our shoulders then laugh at ourselves, as moviegoers and novel readers we can’t get enough of horror. It seems we run toward our fears in order to run away. This is why Stephen King has sold nearly 350 million books. The dark side, however, also includes real suffering and degradation; it includes the anguish of abandonment, the pain of hopelessness.
In Love with Night has assembled an international roster of artists whose work explores terror, dreams, and romance through objects, installations, video, and photography. The works draw on contemporary and historical imagery to translate night into its physical and symbolic states.
Chloe Piene's video work “Blackmouth” lengthens beyond bearing the howl of primordial horror and fear. Dutch artist Erik van der Weijde photographs the ice-skating rinks and playing fields used as hunting grounds by Belgian fiend Marc Dutroux, who kidnapped, enslaved, and murdered. Shana Lutker reconstructs the wayward architecture glimpsed only in her dreams. The artist collective Department of Nocturnal Affairs monitors animal sightings and catalogues the disappearing wildlife in Los Angeles. Drawn together by their affection for the macabre, married comic book creators Jill Thompson and Brian Azzarello demonstrate in their pages an understanding of our secret fears and desires. Ken Gonzales-Day documents the trees that bore the “strange fruit” of lynching. Other work in the exhibition includes the nostalgic deceits of Inga Dorosz, the grim fairytales of Chris Oliveria, the elegantly brutal drawings of noir stylist Eduardo Risso, the frightful forests of Alex Slade, and the memento mori of Michiko Yao.

Chapman University Because the Night

October 19-November 13
Because the Night
Curated by Sabina Ott
Because the Night is an exhibition of artworks across disciplines that explores the poetics of the night and the things that happen under the cloak of darkness, such as magic, dreams, sex, romance, war, murder, ritual, flight and fantasies.  Liberating us from convention, the night enables us to explore taboo behavior, act on hidden impulses and is a fertile ground for fantasy, inspiration and mayhem. The artworks in this exhibition embody the many different aspects of nighttime. Some show activities that occur in the night, others evoke the mysterious and symbiotic relationship between darkness and light, day and night.

The Page
Curated by Rachelle W. Chuang and Karin Lanzoni
The artists’ book is a little known form-genre in which the artist presents his or her ideas in the form of a book. For this survey exhibition, thirty artists from a broad range of studio art practices were asked to submit one page (in the original or poster format) from their artists’ book to mount on the walls of the gallery.  Guest curators Rachelle W. Chuang and Karin Lanzoni selected these artists—painters, photographers, sculptors, graphic designers, printers, performance artists, and book artists—each employing distinctive artistic strategies and techniques.
