Department of Art - New Genres

BACHELOR OF FINE ARTS IN ART

AREA OF STUDY:  NEW GENRES

New Genres is a course of study in the visual arts that incorporates video, performance, installation, digital media, and mixed media. With the increasing presence of digital technology and the expanding integration of multi-media into art as well as every day life, the Art Department at Chapman recognizes the need to build a curriculum in these areas. It is second nature for students to integrate digital technologies, virtual worlds, and Web 2.0 applications into nearly all that they do. The Art Department strives to acknowledge and integrate discussions of these technologies into a critical and creative discourse that will allow students to make insightful artwork with and about these media.

Curriculum
The Art Department currently offers classes in Video Art and Digital Photography, and is developing classes in other new genres, such as performance art and interdisciplinary studies.

Facilities
Facilities include two Macintosh computer labs, with a total of fifty computers equipped with Final Cut Pro Studio, DVD Studio Pro, Motion, and Photoshop CS3 for students to use in developing digital video and photography projects. The recent restructuring of the Art Department into the College of Performing Arts allows for exciting collaborations between Art, Music, Dance, and Theatre that will encourage students to forge new ground in their interdisciplinary projects.
