Gail Griswold

Gail specializes in corporate identity/communications and has designed for hundreds of local and national clients through the years; the first few as an apprentice designer in leading studios, the last 25 years from her private office. Most of her present assignments are in the field of healthcare; she also designs for software and aerospace companies, financial institutions, cities, counties, colleges, museums and symphonies... even a casino or two! Currently she is designing a book in partnership with a sportswriter.

A private client list over the past 25 years includes:
American Heart Association, American Institute of Architects (Louisiana Chapter),
Ampco System Parking, Cal Poly Pomona, City of Anaheim, Commerce Construction,
Corollary (Intel Corp.), First Plus Bank, Los Angeles College of Chiropractic, Lockheed Corporation, Majestic Realty, MemorialCare Health Services, Pacific Symphony Orchestra, Providence Speech and Hearing Center, Silverton Casino, Society of Critical Care Medicine, UCI Medical Center.

An apprentice list in the early years includes:
Adolph Coors Company, Colorado National Bank, Fluor Corporation, Irvine Company,
La Costa International, Lockheed Corporation, Northrop Corporation, Samsonite Corporation, Samsung Electronics Company, Security Pacific Bank, Simpson Paper,
United Bank of Denver.

Gail describes herself as very committed to teaching because she likes to share her love of visual communication–which she believes can be so beautiful, and powerful. She notes that a graphic designer’s purpose is to effectively communicate; since typography (her current teaching assignment at Chapman) is the art of converting language into the
printed word, it is absolutely the cornerstone of good–and meaningful–design. In this highly competitive profession she feels charged with giving her students the edge; one very effective way of distinguishing themselves is to practice good typography, as well as the professional skills she imparts to prepare them for careers in design.

From Board to Keyboard:
Gail believes she is one of the few faculty members at Chapman University who has worked with every form of type, from hot-cast to digital! She graduated from the Colorado Institute of Art in 1976... faded school records indicate 2,880 ‘board’ hours (eq. 120 units) completed in graphic/advertising/and typographic design; photography, color theory, layout and drawing.
